Remember when people talked about having a directory like the original phone book but one that included cell phone numbers.

Yes, it should. My phone is on 100% of the time, although it's set for Do Not Disturb from 8 pm to 5 am.

My brother, who has been sick and I'm worried about him, is usually impossible** to reach. It rings 5 or 6 times and goes to voicemail, which is almost always full. I visited two weeks ago and found he had it set on DND. I turned that off, but today it did the same thing.

If his phone were off, it would go to voicemail right away, right? or almost right away, no 5 rings, Right?

Is there any other way it could ring 5 times and go to VM than DND?

Maybe he sets it to DND when he's sleeping and forgets to change it back. Is there some other settting he could use instead for sleeping?

I have VOIP from Verizon, and a Uniden base-station phone plus 3 cordless phones. They may be 20 years old**. The base station has a simple way to look at past caller-id's and there are quite a few that were blocked by nomorobo. It rings once here. If they could block it before it rang at all, I don't know if those would be listed. I think so but it doesn't work that way for me. Does it ring once for you?

It can be done iirc but I don't know how to look at callerid on the Uniden cordless phones

Well, it will only record phone calls for maybe 30 minutes minus the total of stored incoming messages. I'd like it to be much longer in case trump calls me, or really, when the doctor calls and tells me things and I can't write it all down, I'd like to record it but last time it filled up and stopped in the middle. it beeps every 15 seconds but apparently the other party can't hear it!

I got one that says "Probably Fraud"!

And I get some where the number is preceded by [V] . I suppose that means victory, but I'm not sure.

I did that too. A little tricky to then follow with my own usual message but after 3 or 4 tries, I got it right.

I have read, maybe even 3 years ago, that spammer software knows about this trick already and it doesn't work. I can't judge because I got very few spam calls when I first did it, a few years ago, and I still don't get many and I have no way to know if the ones I do get are from new spammers. '

So far it doesnt' seem to have messed up any real callers, becauase the pause after the tone is short. Don't know how many seconds, but short.

I don't know. I've never called anybody (that I know of) who uses DND. I have mine set so that anybody in my contacts list can get through even during DND, in case my mother (or her doctor or her local police, etc.) calls me.

Airplane mode. But if he won't get it off DND, he won't get it off airplane.

It's the bloody random number dialers that cheese me off. The riale just starts with an area code and then randonly generates exchanges and numbers. Half the time they are not even programmed to only call American numbers - I keep getting calls to register for ObamaCare up here in 519 country (central Ontario Canada!!!!)

The [V] is added by your telcom and is supposed to mean that the number on the caller ID has been verified to be a legitimate number. Unfortunately, it doesn't detect if the call has been initiated by a robocaller's random dialer.

Time to update your cordless phone system. I have a panasonic system I purchased in 2017 with 4 handsets; one on a base unit that has it's own voice mail capability and 3 slave handset/charger bases. One of the setting options is blocking the first ring of every incoming call. We also use NOMOROBO and never have to hear that annoying first ring before NOMOROBO blocks an incoming call. If you're concerned that you'll have less time to answer the phone before it goes to voice mail, go to your verizon phone options on line (I assume that exists, we use Comcast/xfinity and there are many setting options available on the web interface). Extend the number of rings before your Verizon voice mail system intercepts the call by 1 ring for both your phone number and the phone number for NOMOROBO that you've set your phone account to simultaneously ring. (You added that simultaneous number when you set up NOMOROBO to interact with your personal phone number. Go back to those number of ring settings.)

My cordless phone system DOES show the area code of incoming calls using the same area code as my phone number and I can use that incoming call information from my phone's caller ID history to return the call as well as to add their name/number to my phone's internal dialing directory.

The Panasonic phone system has many more options, including using multiple ring tones for whichever incoming numbers you choose to add to each ring tone's group. We put high priority numbers from our phone's dialing directory (doctors, family, our condo's front desk, condo's gate house, etc.) into one ring tone group and leave all other calls both from our dialing directory and all callers not in our dialing directory into a second ring tone group. There's also a snooze feature that is specific to each handset and can be set for the time the feature turns on and the time it turns off. We use it on our bedroom's handset to mute the ring tone for all incoming calls from our lower priority group for the hours late at night until our get out of bed time in the AM.
