That's rich coming from anyone from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, or Portugal. One might debate the matter with anyone from the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, or Norway, but oddly enough, they are all monarchies.

It was for me, as that was the only argument that I found convincing.

Rather too late now but, was there never a chance of reforming the political structure? I'm not over fond of our see-saw parliamentary system and the Americans seem to struggle with their set up but perhaps something else could have been managed.

The Head of State in the UK has no real power but takes the load off the government in respect of ceremonial duties - and draws in tourists. Be interesting to compare the cost with the USA President.

Two problems. First, it would require the party in power to change the system that put them in power. Second, a recent survey of 27 different democracies showed that the British system was among the least unpopular.

The EU refuses to accept seed potatoes from the UK because the UK has not entered into a sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement with the EU. That is because the British government does not want to enter into an agreement that would require British producers to follow EU rules on production. I am not sure why the British government has prohibited the import of seed potatoes from the EU, but it seems to be due to an existing agreement lapsing. Whether that is linked to the SPS agreement, or it is just the British government playing tit for tat is not clear from anything I have read.

We tried and tried and tried and the EU told us to f*ck off, so we did.

No politician or government employee anywhere wants to see smaller government. They were *all* remainers. (Farage wasn't/isn't really a politician, he's a market barrow boy).

Everyone paid from taxation wants to see bigger government, even though government size is already well past the point where it can be paid for out of taxation.

We decided they were cheaper than a president, and a lot less troublesome.

Perhaps I wasn't paying attention but I don't recall our leadership attempting to form a large enough group to tell the Germans and French where to go. I suppose Italy and Greece were always going to follow the money:-(

With half the City moving to New York and the baby boomers creating fiscal drag, we may have made a mistake.

And now Italy has EU appointed presidents and they cant kick them or the EU out. They are effectively run by Germany, which is effectively run by Russia.

Nope, because it was impossible to know how mindlessly bloody minded the EU was going to be, No one, not even Barnier could know that at that stage.

In fact Corbyn never did say if he was in favor or not.

Because of covid and the invasion of the Ukraine.

No one who matters ever even claimed that the UK would always be better off whatever else happened apart from brexit.

And the UK is MUCH better off in some areas like now being free to decide which EU citizens it will allow to move to the UK and being free to decide for itself all policy issues and being free to give the current govt the bums rush at the ballot box if enough of the voters are pissed off enough about policy issues or even if they believe that the current govt isnt doing enough about inflation etc.

And regardless of the result, the majority of voters who bothered to vote voted to leave for whatever reason and you remoaners get to like that or lump it.
