Hmm. they didn't explain their password arrangement very well!

Ours is similar. Fibre comes from the pole to an anchor point at the eaves, then continues down to a point halfway up the upstairs rooms. Then through a hole in the wall into the back of a tiny junction box, where it is jointed to 'internal' fibre (about 3 inches of it) which goes to the ONT. The router is less than a metre away.

Personally I would just pop an extension bar near the ONT, check something works with that, then re-site when the have gone.

Supposing you wished to move your FTTP install later. How hard would it be to joint your own supplied pigtail to the street fibre inside the demarc box? Of course you're not supposed to do this - this is purely for research and education purposes you understand...

You would need a fusion splicer to do it properly. An effective alternative would be to pull back the internal fibre, complete with its connector and stow it in an adjacent box and then extend with one of the pre-terminated bend-insensitive fibres which are readily available on eBay along with suitable couplers. I have moved an Openreach ONT from a managed apartment into a plant room so as to set up a network sharing and isolation arrangement for multiple tenants. I enlarged the hole in the plasterboard wall sufficiently to get the optical connector through it. (It was well wrapped up to keep it dust-free.) When Openreach subsequently visited to fix a broken fibre which had suffered whiplash after a car drove into the distribution pole they did not comment on the new arrangement. John

I took delivery of some (one-piece) pass-through Ethernet RJ-45 plugs recently and have been giving them a try. Shhsh, I had forgotten what a pain this sort of thing was!

I think the pass-through plugs I have fitted previously were the two-piece design, I am beginning to regret this purchase...

I did some sockets yesterday. One thing I learnt is that the wires on cat5e are much thinner, especially the insulation, than cat6 wires. I tried putting a cat6 wire in a cat5e socket (using a Krone punchdown tool) and only half of the terminals penetrated the insulation. In a proper cat6 socket it fitted much better (not tested anything electrically yet).

Might explain why I couldn't make good connections - almost all of my wiring is cat6/cat6a, for which cat5e RJ45s won't fit. Pity as I have a giant box of cat5e fittings.

For the passthrough RJ45s, what I suggest is to strip about 5cm of all the wires and then feed the bare copper in one wire at a time. Tug on the end to get them into the right slot in the plug. Once everything is in place, pull them all through together so the insulation then gets dragged into the slots. I found it much easier to get the bare copper aligned than try to do it with insulation - if I did that I could get 7 wires in but there was no space to push the 8th wire through. Since they're passthrough you're cutting off the ends anyway so it doesn't matter if you give yourself more copper to grab hold of.

Thanks Theo, I can see that insertion procedure working better than my approach. I will give that a go.

I am surprised by your observation that the wires in your cat5e cable are thicker than on cat6e. I will have to take a look at the spec... I did notice when browsing cat6 cables recently that there were variations in the wire spec - and I had not appreciated that the plugs could accept different wire gauges.

I bought a 'cat7' flat-style cable on eBay recently. This is serving its purpose, but I have since read that (a) these flat cables are typically out of spec, and (b) the individual wires are thinner than normal/they should be.
