But if connected via Cat5E to an upstream PoE switch to supply data and power (with the remote box extracting 12Vdc in between) does that mean the CAT5e exitting the remote box is devoid of power ??.
If the 'remote box' is a splitter, it takes one ethernet with PoE in, and outputs one cable carrying DC and one regular ethernet, which has no power.
If you want to 'forward' power while at the same time tapping it off, there are PoE-powered switches which also export PoE:
For 'proper' PoE there's no harm if you plug it into a device that knows nothing about PoE - it works like regular ethernet. I'm not 100% that's the case with passive PoE.

Openreach supplied no router to me. Only the ONT.
It is the ISP who normally ships the router if one is supplied.
There is some wiggle room - although different contractors vary in their flexibility on location. I am told cityfibre are generally pretty good. Openreach are in my own experience relatively accommodating - although won't usually do heights / lofts etc.
Nope - they would make you aware when you book the install that power will be required. (which for the purposes of installation could be an extension lead I expect - you can do something more permanent after).
You are unlikely to get as far an an installation if you can't provide power.
Openreach seem to have changed procedures a bit over time.
When ours was done, it comes in on overhead line. They fitted a suspension eye at the eves, and used twisted wire to grab the cable and lash it to the eye, then continued an unbroken run down and along the side of the house (I already had some trunking in place for phone wires etc - so they put it in that), finally then drilled through and poked the fibre in through it, clipped it internally, and took it close to where I wanted the ONT - which they put on the wall near my comms cabinet.
These days they tend to favour an external junction box at lowish level on the outside wall, and a separate thinner more workable fibre from there to the ONT.
There are lots of places in this house where I could 'provide power'. Equally, there are others where it would involve running an extension cable through a doorway or the length of a hallway or some other unsuitable arrangement.
If I have some say in the choice of location, I would take this into account. On the other hand, an installer might want to choose a location based entirely on what is convenient to him.
If it's Openreach, you can pay another £40 for a 'premium' installation which means they'll do more internal cabling work:
In reality, they might go a bit beyond the 'standard' install if you make their life easier. eg provide some ready-made trunking to next to a socket, or a bit of duct under the floorboards, or whatever that's easier than doing the bare minimum.

You seem to be making three assumptions. 1, that installers are complete c*nts, 2 that installers won’t listen to requests and 3, you can’t work with them to achieve a desired outcome.
I got my fibre installed around the edge of my garden and under my block paving, in through my front wall, under my lounge floor, across under my hall floor and into my under-stairs cupboard in the centre of my house.
Yes, I did 90% of the work but I got exactly what I wanted. ;-)

Well, that is sort-of where I am at.
There are two clear options for siting the OMT from my point of view (reminder, the fibre is from a telegraph pole)
1) come in on the first floor, close to the current landline entry point, and site the OMT near to the current NTE5This gives a shorter Ethernet run to my router (7m?), but I will probably have to use PoE.
2) come in on the ground floor, and site the OMT in the 'cupboard under the stairs (on an external wall). I will have to run a longer and more fiddly Ethernet cable (12m?) to the router on the first floor. OTOH there is a spare power outlet in that cupboard which can be used to power the OMT.I was originally thinking of (1), but now I am wondering about (2). But it would be nice to know before they arrive, so that I know whether and where to run any new cable...

What they insist on is access even if the owner is out to a ground level box to check the end of 'their optical cable' .
What happens after that is optional. They could run the fibre to the ONT back up to a first floor room, but they would rather not I suspect.
Mutatis mutandis, that isn't so very different from running Ethernet up to the same location.
Indeed ... which is why I am now tending towards option (2) - which I presume they will prefer in any case.
It is topographically what I have here. The only downside is that the ONT is on a different mains circuit which would make UPS complicated..
There are no ground level boxes here (BT install) There are boxes on their pole at step ladder heights of course.
