Ever Given - DIYers ideas ?

I must admit I would have thought I would have seen a few (dozen) land based ropes to straighten up the ship in the channel and pull off the bank at the same time.

It's very well grounded. Apparently only 2/3rds of the canal width is dredged deeply enough for that vessel.

I expect that all the rapid fixes have been tried, or shortly will be, and then they'll have to start unloading the cargo.

The front looks high out of the water judging from the paint lines. The rear somewhat less.

I saw one article that mentioned weeks to sort out and move!

Same Dad isn't still here as he has taken many a Shell Oil Tanker up the Suez Canal and I'm sure he'd have something to say about it all. ;-)

He was doing that when the Suez Crisis happened and they had to go back to the old route, round the Cape etc.

I think they did have one mishap traversing the Suez canal, some small sailing vessel trying to use the 'power gives way to sail' idea but with nowhere to go and no way to stop, that didn't work out too well for them (and they had to be pulled aboard the tanker).

As ship as big as Ever Given in a canal that narrow (especially the width useable by something with that draught and the windage of a block of flats) was an accident waiting to happen.

Good job we are still on good trading terms with our friends in Europe when all the JIT supplies fall apart ... ;-(

diy fix. Push some of the containers at the bow overboard then both the crew move to the stern and jump up and down whilst the 1st mate guns it full astern. ;-)

Are there any ships not sailing under the Panama flag? ;-)

If it is just supported at each end I am waiting for it to break in the middle when the tide goes out.

Unfortunately, that is going to be very difficult in water. You need a substantial force and also somewhere on the ship that can take that force to attach it to. In the end I'd suggest removing silt from one side might be the best way in the end. Brian

The only thing that might work is take out all its fuel and as much of the cargo off as barge based cranes can reach. Then raise the water level in the canal as much as they dare to float it off. I doubt if there is a big enough or strong enough floatation collar for it. Even then the biggest tugs that they have there might not be enough.

Breaking it free of stiction to the mud is non trivial.

I expect the Dutch will eventually sort it out - they are the world experts. Could take a while though it is very seriously *STUCK*.

What you can't see is the submerged bow bulb embedded deep into the bank.

Could they use the balast tanks to sort of rock it and compress what is under it - then blow the ballast and be free?

Have you seen the height of the load?

No locks - open to the sea at both ends. How do you raise the water level?

Only option then is wait for the next full moon spring tide and prayer. That is tomorrow so if they are not ready by then it will be another fortnight before the high tide is favourable again. It could cut both ways too. Tidal range is increased so with its stern and bow stuck on the edges it could break its back if the middle becomes unsupported!

I suspect nothing would exert enough force on it to make a blind bit of difference. Like trying to stop an elephant with a pea shooter.
