I can only imagine the insurance wrangling that's going to follow ...

Yet most land based nuclear blasts tend to leave a crater.

Interesting, thanks Andy. I'm pretty sure Dad said nothing more came of it and they just dropped the 'unfortunate' sailors off at the first appropriate point.

Unfortunately he died (unexpectedly) before we are able to officially record any his seafairing stories for the book ... 'My daze at sea' (our / working title) we were trying to get him to write (even if only for us).

And in a way I'm glad he didn't waste any time on it as he was still enjoying his life, out and about with Mum, even close to the end but at the same time I'm sad I didn't get / make the chance to spend more time with him and hearing more about his life at sea.

When he came ashore (when I was born) he kept involved with ships [1] as a 'ships chandler' and I can remember going to work with him on many_a_Saturday morning (via the Lyons Corner house for a box of donuts) and then visiting the small ships in the various London docks delivering small quantities of provisions.

Possibly because of Dads friendly nature and own seafaring experience, we were often invited onboard for a drink or even meal and I would be often given a tour of the ship, especially the engine room. ;-)

ISTR a similar suggestion was made for widening the Panama canal. I don't think they were anticipating blowing it all up into the air, but detonating the bombs deep underground, causing depressions to form on the surface. Never really convinced as to how that works, myself.
