Updating WhatsApp

I have had an iPhone 7 for several months. I am not very competent at using it and use it as little as possible.

I subscribe to a WhatsApp group, and have been doing so for several weeks with no problems.

But yesterday WhatsApp told me that my version of WhatsApp has expired and to go to the App Store to update it. But I then get the message that it cannot connect to the App Store. On attempting to update it, I get told my iPhone isn't connected to the internet. In the past I have been asked for a password to access the Apple store, but not this time. How should I proceed?

FWIW, I have recently been upgraded to BT's Digital Voice (spit!), if that's relevant, which it probably isn't.

Start, by fixing that...

Settings> Wifi - and connect to your wifi, may need the wifi password.

and/or

Settings> Mobile Data - and turn it on

If that doesn't help, turning it on and off again is worth doing. Certainly that process tends to work when my Android phone stops doing wifi calling for no reason.

Did the 'upgrade' to Digital Voice entail having a new router? If so, the new one will pretty certainly have a different WiFi password from the old one, and you'll have to tell your phone the new one to enable it to connect to the internet.

Or change the Wi-Fi network name and password to be the same as the old router’s one.

That's not always possible nowadays. For instance, Safari arrogantly refuses to enter a particular ipmi password for me even though it knows it, because it regards it as insufficiently secure. I keep telling it that this is my decision, but it gets me nowhere.

Thanks for the replies. I think I've managed to fix it. When BT gave me Digital Voice they also gave me a new hub. This then gave me a new wireless network, requiring a new password. Seems to be OK for the moment.

But instead of one telephone line from the nearest pole, I now have two. I wonder if BT will come and take the old one away sometime. If they're installing Digital Voice everywhere, as I understand they're going to, that means a lot of scrap copper becoming available!

I had a work colleague who's mantra was 'improvement means deterioration'. He was right!

Exactly right! But I'd fixed it before I saw your post. Thanks anyway.

Sounds like it is not on wifi and could not get adequate signal for mobile data at the time (or you have wifi turned off)

Did you get a new router for the digital voice (that will likely have a different SSID/Password for the previous one).

I can't count the number of 'upgrades' that have resulted in chaos and confusion before normal operation is resumed. They are always said to be for my benefit, but they take ages to fix. See my problem right now with VLC, in uk.comp.os.linux.

Bit surprised at that. They generally remove it when they install fibre or are you still on VDSL with two copper rather than one copper and one fibre. Its actually OpenReach or one of their contractors that do this. If one is redundant OpenReach will remove it. There is a "equipment move" page where you can request. I makes threats about charges, but of course they do it free.

They have already sold some of it...

I retained the VDSL for two days until I was sure the fibre was OK, and I'd changed over to my own router, and they'd routed my IP block to the fibre. Then I cancelled the VDSL.

So the copper is still there.

I did the same, then I went to..

filled in the form. They came and removed it...
