If you block somebody on facebook whatsapp can they still sent a text to your cellphone number ?
I'd hope so.
if they do know your actual mobile phone number, then they can still make phone calls or send you text messages as both of these functions are outside of WhatApp and both are features of any smartphone.
so on whatsapp they don't know your number then?
You do on my version of WhatsApp. Whether it is possible to send someone a message on WhatsApp without letting them know your phone number and discovering theirs I really don't know. It is certainly possible that if they initiated the "chat" and you never replied they might not know your phone number - you'd have to read the small print.
Trivial to block them after the first time, though.
I was thinking that....but was just wondering if they can still send me a normal text....and If I block the number on the callphone as well does this stop texts as well ?
There's not necessarily a direct link between WhatsApp and the phone number (if any) of the device it's using. You can run WhatsApp on (say) a Wifi-only tablet. When you register, you need to supply a real number
- maybe of a redundant phone which still works - which can receive an SMS with a confirmation code, but once you've done that you can dispense with the phone. The number will be used by the tablet for WhatsApp purposes - but that's all. If anyone tries to ring or send an SMS to the number, that will go to the phone and not to the WhatsApp device.
You've got me confused now. I only ever look at WhatsApp on my computer. But if my phone isn't online via my Wi-Fi and the PC talking to it, it doesn't download (or upload) messages.
Be handy not to involve the phone at times.
NHS T&T avoidance then ;)
what?.....just checked you can block calls and texts or both....
Get a new sim and number ?.
I think what you're doing is still running WhatsApp on your phone, but linking it to your PC for display purposes.
I was talking about running it on an Android device which isn't a phone. You "borrow" a phone number for the purpose of setting it up, but it then runs stand-alone, using Wifi.
Think of it like this. Once you've set up WhatsApp on your phone, you could remove the SIM card, and it would still work as long as you have Wifi.
No. I use whats app web, and it wont run until it detects I have a mobile phone powered up and on line
But what is WhatsApp Web running on - a PC? I'm talking about running it on an Android tablet which doesn't have a SIM card. I've done it - but only enough to check that it works. TBH I can't swear that the phone I used to register it wasn't still online. I'll do some more experiments!
I've been using WhatsApp for a couple of years on a phone that very rarely has any mobile network signal, often not for a week or two at a time, but is connected via WiFi. WhatsApp runs quite happily, and works with WhatsApp Web on my computer. I expect you could run it on a cheap PAYG mobile without incurring any call costs, provided you kept the number current by making a call every six months, or whatever is required to keep PAYG phones in operation.
You may need to search for APK for whatsapp as it may not install on tablet with no Mobile access. The Play Store only lets you install on compatible device.
If you later want to swap the same account to a different device you will need access to the mobile number.
Or more likely re-install after a factory reset...
You can but what happens when the number is re-allocated and the owner of the new number also wants to use whats app.
the wife and I have had consecutive numbers since the early naughties so no way ....
I do that with two 3 sims
Maybe if you run WhatsApp on one of them and link it to WiFi you can use WhatsApp Web with a phone you never have to answer or read the texts.
