Is a crew of three finishers and one laborer enough for a big patio pour?

My contractor just finished up a new broom-finish patio and a set of stairs coming off my back sliding door, but I’m a bit worried about how it went down. They only had three finishers and a single laborer on-site for the whole pour. It felt like they were realy scrambling to get the control joints cut in before the slab set up too hard on them. The finish looks decent for the most part, but the guys were moving at a breakneck pace and left the protective plastic taped all over my tan siding and the glass door. They didn't really clean up the bare dirt around the edges either, just packed up and headed out as soon as the broom hit the last section. I’m just wondering if that’s a standard crew size for a residential job or if I shold be looking closer for mistakes. Is it typical for them to leave the masking tape and plastic for the homeowner to deal with, or did they just run out of time beacuse they were short-staffed?


Four guys for a standard residential patio and stairs is actually a pretty typical crew size, but that doesn't mean they weren't under the gun. Concrete waits for nobody, and if the mix showed up hot or the sun was beating down, three finishers can easily find themselves sprinting to keep up with the set time. Leaving the plastic and tape on the siding is a bit of a localized debate in the trade, but generally, it's considered poor form. Most high-end crews will pull the masking as soon as the broom finish is locked in to ensure they aren't leaving adhesive residue on your tan siding. If they left the mess and didn't grade out the dirt around the edges, they definitely checked out early. They likely burned all their energy just trying to beat the set and didn't have the gas left for a proper **site restoration**.

You shoud take a close look at the broom lines and the edges of those control joints. When a crew is rushed, you'll often see 'chatter' marks in the joints where the tool jumped because the cream was getting too stiff, or the broom bristles might have pulled up small chunks of aggregate instead of leaving clean, crisp lines. Check the stairs specifically for any honeycombing or voids on the faces if they pulled the forms quickly.

While the finish might look decent now, the lack of cleanup is a red flag for their attention to detail. Give the slab a good rinse once it’s cured enought to walk on and look for any low spots or 'bird baths' where water might collect. If the drainage is right and the joints are straight, you probably got lucky despite the skeleton crew, but you're definitely stuck doing the cleanup work they should have handled before they loaded the truck.

Three finishers and a laborer is plenty if they know thier business, but sounds like they got bit by a hot load or a high-early 4000 PSI mix. If they were fighting it that hard, check those stairs for 'honeycombing' on the risers. Guys rushing the finish usually miss the consolidation. I’d also bet they didn't use a proper curing compound like a Diamond Clear or even a basic dissipate wax. If they didn't have time to pull the tape, they definitely didn't have time to spray a cure. Check those joints too—if they used a standard 1/4" radius tool and it's looking ragged, they blew the let it get way too stiff.

While the crew size is technically adequate for the square footage, the frantic pace you observed suggests they likely neglected to monitor the slump of the concrete upon arrival, which often leads to the exact scenario where the chemical hydration process outpaces the finishers' ability to manipulate the surface cream effectively. I whould be particularly concerned about the depth of those control joints; if they were truly scrambling, they may have failed to cut them to at least one-quarter of the slab's thickness, which is mathematically essential to ensure the inevitable shrinkage cracks occur within the designated weakened plane rather than wandering across your patio. Did you happen to notice if they used a handheld groover or a walk-behind saw, and did they mention the specific cement-to-water ratio they were working with?

Update: I looked for that honeycombing on the stairs like you guys suggested, and the risers acutally look okay. Still, scraping that baked-on tape off my tan siding is taking forever. If they were fighting a 'hot load' like you mentioned, does that mean the slab is more prone to cracking later on?
