Tips for cantilevered pond entries that nobody talks about

Building cantilevered stairs over a pond or a shallow pool is one of those projects that looks incredible but requires a massive amount of foresight regarding the final finishes. If you are planning on tiling over the concrete later, you have to account for those thicknesses during the pour. I always make sure to calculate the exact reduction needed so the finished tile sits flush with the rest of the walkway. It’s way easier to drop your forms by a half-inch now than to try and grind down cured concrete later when the client realizes the step height is off. Another thing people overlook is the lighting. If you want that high-end look, you shold embed LED channels directly into the nosings while the mud is still wet. It makes the wiring way cleaner than trying to retrofit somethig underneath later. For the finish, don't worry about getting it perfectly smooth if tile is the end goal. A rough broom finish is actually better becuase it gives the thin-set a mechanical bond to grab onto. Prep work is where you win or lose on these floating features. Take your time with the formwork and double-check your elevations before the truck arrives.


I ran into a massive headache with the LED channels when I did a tiered walkway over a koi pond last October. I used those aluminum tracks from KLUS, but I didn't plug the ends well enough before the pour. Slurry got inside the tracks and I spent three hours picking it out with a dental tool. Now I tell everyone to use duct tape or even hot glue to seal those channel ends completely before the concrete hits the forms.

For the finish, I actually skipped the tile and went with a salt finish using coarse rock salt. It gives a nice grip for wet feet without looking as industrial as a broom finish. If you go that route, just make sure you’re using a high-quality penetrating sealer like Siloxa-Tek 8500 once it’s cured. It keeps the algae from staining the pores, which is a nightmare to clean on stairs that sit right over the water line. Also, double-check your rebar spacing; I went with #4 bars on 6-inch centers to handle the weight since my cantilever was sticking out almost 30 inches.

Spot on with the #4 bars at 6 inches, that extra steel is cheap insurance against the bounce. I’d just add that you shold use a high-quality reactive form release on those cantilever edges. Since the steps are hanging over water, stripping the forms is a nightmare if they stick even a little bit. If you blow an edge while prying, patching concrete that's allready over the pond is a losing battle. I also like to slightly chamfer the bottom edge of the nose so the water drips off clean instead of tracking back toward the main support and causing lime staining.

Back in the day, we didn't have all these fancy LED tracks; we just used a wood chamfer strip to create a shadow line under the tread. If you’re going for that cantilever look, you better vibrate the hell out of those forms. I’ve seen too many guys rely on a 'wet' mix that honeycombs on the underside where you can't see it til you strip the wood. Use a pencil vibrator and work it around that steel. Also, if you’re pouring over water, stick with marine-grade plywood for the bottom forms. Regular CDX swells too much if it catches any moisture before the mud sets. Ruins your clean lines every time.

Quick update—I acutally tried using that reactive form release on a small test pour and it realy helps with those cantilever edges. One thing though, after hearing about that dental tool nightmare with the LED tracks, has anyone found a foolproof way to plug the ends? I’m thinking about using marine-grade silicone instead of tape to keep the slurry out while we vibrate the forms.
