By letting the central system sit at 74 at night and letting the portable handle the bedroom, I saw my monthly bill drop by nearly $60 during July and August. One thing I'd add is to watch the drainage if you live in a humid climate like I do in Georgia. Even though these are supposed to evaporate the moisture, I found that on the soupier nights, I still had to hook up a small drain hose to a bucket to keep it from shutting off due to a full internal reservoir.
