I spent the morning swapping out my old rattling window unit for the Midea U, and I ended up going with the Plus model from Home Depot instead of the standard one from Amazon. It was only two bucks more, and man, I'm glad I did. The efficiency ratings are a bit better, but the real winner for me was that redesigned bracket. The install process is usually the part I dread most, but this bracket felt way sturdier and easier to level than the older version my brother has. Once it's in, the window actually closes all the way down into the slot, which makes the room incredibly quiet. It's crazy how much more refined this feels for $350. I’ve been running it for a few hours now and the inverter technology is no joke. It doesn’t do that annoying kick-on sound where the lights flicker; it just maintains the temp with a low hum. If you're looking at these, definatly check the model numbers becasue that MAW08U1QWT version has those small tweaks that make a big difference.
Just finished installing the Midea U Plus and the bracket alone is worth it

I picked up the 10k BTU version last summer for my master bedroom becuase my old GE unit sounded like a jet engine taking off every twenty minutes. The U-shape realy is the best part of the design. Being able to acutally use the window lock and having that physical barrier between the compressor and my ears made a massive difference for my sleep quality. I actually struggled a bit with the foam side blocks on the older bracket. I ended up using some extra weather stripping from Home Depot to get a truly airtight seal because I was worried about humidity leaking in during those 90-degree August days. It sounds like that newer MAW08U1QWT model fixed some of those alignment issues I dealt with during my setup. The power draw is what really sold me though. I keep a monitor on my circuit, and seeing the inverter drop down to using less than 200 watts once the room hits 72 degrees is impressive. It’s way better than the constant cycling of the cheaper non-inverter units that just hammer your electric bill every month.
I actualy had a bit of a rough time with the smart features on my 12,000 BTU unit. While the hardware is solid, getting it to stay connected to my 2.4GHz network was a nightmare. I spent two hours troubleshooting becasue the app kept timing out during the pairing process. If you have a mesh system like Eero, you might have to temporarily disable the 5GHz band just to get the thing to register. Also, keep an eye on the drainage if you live somewhere humid like Florida. The manual says it's a slinger design to help efficiency, but after a week of heavy rain, I noticed some funky smells. I ended up pulling the plug in the outer pan just to keep the standing water from getting gross. It runs a bit louder now because the fan isn't splashing the water onto the coils, but it beats having mold issues in the long run. The cooling performance is still miles better than the Frigidaire I replaced.
I literally just created an account to say thanks for the model number tip! I’m grabbing the Home Depot one tomorrow and I am so pumped to finally have a window I can actually see out of again. That low hum sounds like a total dream compared to the rattling box I have now.
Random side note—does anyone know if these units attract more bugs beacuse of the gap in the U-shape? I’m terrified of wasps finding a way in through the side seals or if they like to nest in that middle slot area!
