I'm honestly losing my mind with how hot my bedroom gets even with the central air running. The building management keeps sending HVAC guys out but they say everythign is "fine" despite it being way too warm for me to sleep. I need my room at 66 degrees or I just toss and turn all night. Right now it's nowhere near that. Since we aren't allowed to have window units here, I'm stuck looking at portable options but my first attempt was a total disaster. I bought a 14,000 BTU Westinghouse unit thinking it whould be plenty for a master bedroom. It wasn't. It was basically just a giant, expensive fan that didn't acutally lower the temp at all. It just moved the air around. I've got a window for a vent hose, so that part is fine, but I need somethig that actually functions like an air conditioner and not a glorified humidifier. Does anyone have a specific brand or model that actually works for a single room? I'm looking for something heavy-duty that can handle a larger bedroom before the summer heat really kicks in. I don't care if it's loud or bulky as long as I can finally stop sweating trough my sheets every single night.

The reason that 14k BTU unit felt like a glorified fan is beacuse it was almost certainly a single-hose design. Single-hose portables are notoriously inefficient because they exhaust hot air out the window, which creates a vacuum in your room. To compensate for that lost air, warm air from the rest of your apartment gets sucked in under the bedroom door and thru every crack in the walls. You're basially trying to cool a room while simultaneously pulling in 75-degree air from the rest of the building.
If you want to actually hit 66 degrees, you need a **dual-hose unit** with an inverter compressor. The Midea Duo is probaly the best one on the market right now for this specific scenario. Since it has two hoses—one for intake and one for exhaust—it doesn't mess with the air pressure in your bedroom. It just cycles the air inside and stays much colder. I've used the 12,000 BTU SACC version in a master bedroom that gets brutal direct afternoon sun, and it turned the place into a meat locker. Another solid option is the Zafro 16,000 BTU model, but you have to make sure it's the dual-hose inverter version. The inverter technology is a big deal if you're a light sleeper. Instead of the compressor loudly slamming on and off all night, it just slows down or speeds up to maintain the temp. It's way more consistent for keeping that 66-degree target without the wild temprature swings you get with those cheap ASHRAE-rated units. One last thing to check is the window kit itself. Most of the plastic sliders that come with these units are flimsy and leak air. If you really want it cold, get some **foam insulation tape** to seal the gaps around the window slider. If hot air is leaking back in from the outside right next to where the exhaust is pumping it out, the machine has to work twice as hard. Stick to the dual-hose setup and you'll actually see the temperature on your thermostat drop.
That vacuum effect explains exactly why my current unit feels like it's struggling. I never thought about the air being pulled in from under the door. I’m looking at the Midea Duo now, but does the hose setup work for horizontal sliding windows? My window slides side-to-side rather than up and down, and I’m worried the kit won't seal right. Also, is the "hose-in-hose" design actualy easy to click into place, or am I going to be wrestling with it for hours? I just want to make sure I don't buy another dud that’s impossible to install.
The Midea Duo kit is acutally pretty versatile for horizontal sliders. I've got one in my office with side-sliding windows and it fits fine, though you might need to trim the plastic or use that foam tape mentioned earlier to get a tight seal. One thing people miss: even with a dual-hose, those hoses get hot and radiate heat back into the room. If you're serious about hitting 66, buy some reflective wrap or 'hose socks' for the exhaust. It sounds overkill, but it stops the hose itself from acting like a radiator while the unit is trying to cool. It makes a noticable difference in how hard the compressor has to work.
The Midea’s hose-in-hose is way less of a headache than those old-school two-hose setups. It snaps right into the bracket without much fuss. If you're really aiming for 66 degrees, grab a cheap digital thermometer for your nightstand. The sensors on these portables are usually built into the unit, so they think the room is chilled way before the air reaches your bed. You'll probly have to set the unit to 62 or 63 to actualy hit that 66-degree sweet spot. Also, check your power; these heavy-duty units can easily trip a 15-amp breaker if you’ve got other stuff running on the same line.
If you're pushing for 66, keep an eye on the drainage. Even "self-evaporating" units struggle when running 24/7 at max capacity. If it's humid, the internal tank fills up and the compressor shuts off, leaving you with just the fan mid-sleep. I'd suggest propping the unit up and running a continuous drain hose into a gallon jug. Also, definately keep a floor fan running to mix the air. Cold air is heavy and pools near the floor. If your bed is high up, you'll be sweating while your feet are freezing. Circulating that air is the only way to get a uniform temp throughout the room.
