At what temperature do you finally cave and flip the AC on?

The humidity has been creeping up lately and I'm already starting to feel the heat in my apartment. I ussually try to hold out as long as posible to save on the electric bill, but there's definately a breaking point where the sweat just gets to be too much. For me, I've found that once the thermometer hits about 32 degrees Celsius inside, the AC has to go on. It's non-negotiable at that point. If it's hovering around 30 degrees, I can usually get by with just my big box fan blowing directly on me while I'm at my desk. It’s not ideal but it keeps the air moving enugh to be tolerable. Barely. I’m curious what the threshold is for everyone else though. Do you wait until you're actually melting, or do you have a specific number on the thermostat that triggers the switch? My neighbor already has their outdoor unit humming away and it's barely even June. I feel like a cheapskate sometimes, but electricity isn't getting any cheaper.


Waiting until 32°C inside is a massive test of endurance, especially if you live in a high-humidity area. I usually find that the **relative humidity** is what forces my hand way before the actual temprature does. Once it hits about 60% humidity inside, I’m flipping that switch even if it’s only 26°C or 27°C. That "sticky" feeling makes it impossible to focus or even sit still without sweating trough a shirt, and no amount of fan power fixes that heavy air.

From a technical standpoint, if you're running a standard central air or window unit, you should be careful about firing it up if it's still cold outside. Running a compressor when it's under 15.5°C (60°F) outdoors can actually damage the system becuase the oil gets too thick to lubricate properly. But since you're talking about it being 30°C+ inside, you're definately in the safe zone for operation. Modern inverter systems handle those lower ambient temps better, but for older gear, once it's hot, you're good to go. My typical routine is setting the living room to 23°C during the day if I'm just lounging. If I'm doing chores or moving around, I might drop it to 22°C. For sleeping, though, I can't do anything higher than 20°C. It sounds like a lot on the bill, but using a programmable thermostat helps mitigate the cost by letting the temp drift up while I'm out of the house. Keeping the blinds closed on the sunny side of the apartment also makes a huge difference in how hard the AC has to work.

Don't feel like a cheapskate for wanting to be comfortable in your own home. Electricity prices are brutal, but poor sleep and constant sweating have thier own costs in terms of productivity and sanity. If you want to save a bit, try using the **Dry Mode** on your remote if your unit has it. It focuses more on removing moisture than aggressively dropping the temp, which often makes 26°C feel perfectly fine.

32 degrees sounds like a total nightmare, I ussually start cracking by 28. I never even looked at the symbols on my remote, but I think I have that raindrop icon for Dry Mode. Does it actualy pull less power than the regular cooling setting? I'm always paranoid that if the compressor is running at all, my bill is just going to skyrocket. If it can handle the swampy feeling in my place without costing a fortune, that would be a huge game changer for me this July.

I’m a 24°C trigger guy myself. If you wait til 32°C, you’ve let the 'thermal mass' of your apartment—walls, floors, and furniture—soak up all that heat. Your AC will have to work twice as hard for hours just to cool the actual structure down. It's often cheaper to maintain a steady 25°C than to try and recover from a literal oven.

I honestly can't imagine waiting untill 32. My PC alone turns my small office into an oven once it hits 26 outside. I ussually cave at 25 beacuse once the heat gets into the mattress and couch, you're fighting a losing battle all night. Have you checked your window seals? I found some cheap weather stripping at the hardware store last year and it actually kept the place a couple of degrees cooler before I had to touch the remote. Every little bit helps when the grid prices are spiking.

One thing people overlook is where they’re acutally measuring that 32°C. If your sensor is high on a wall, you're getting a skewed reading. I keep a separate sensor at couch height beacuse that’s the air I’m actually sitting in.

Also, waiting until it’s that hot puts an insane 'pull-down' load on the compressor. You aren't just cooling the air; you're fighting the heat stored in your drywall and furniture. If your filter is even slightly dusty, trying to drop the temp 7 degrees at once is a recipe for a frozen evaporator coil. I usually set mine to 26°C early just to manage the heat load before the sun peaks.
