Could a power surge really fry seven AC motherboards at the exact same time?

My repairman just dropped a bombshell saying every single one of my indoor units is dead becuase the motherboards blew. I have seven units total and it seems impossible for all of them to go out at once like this. I looked at one of the boards and there’s a component that’s totally melted and charred black right by the fuse. It looks like it took a massive hit and there’s soot all over the surrounding area. I’m relly hoping I don't have to replace every single board because that's going to be insanely expensive. I’m not an expert at all so I’m just trying to figure out if this guy is being for real or if he’s just trying to upsell me on parts I don't need. Is it possible to just repair that one burnt piece or is the whole board usally junk once it looks that bad? The timing just feels so wierd and I'm stressed about the bill.


Having seven units go down simultaneously isn't a coincidence; it's almost certainly the result of a massive power surge or a nearby lightning strike. When you see charred components and soot right next to a fuse, that's the board’s surge protection circuit doing exactly what it was designed to do. Specifically, it sounds like the **Metal Oxide Varistor** (MOV) took the hit. Its job is to short itself out and blow the fuse when the voltage spikes too high, effectively sacrificing itself to try and save the more expensive microprocessors downstream.

While it’s frustrating, your repairman isn't necessarily scamming you. Most HVAC techs won't touch board-level repairs because of liability. If they solder on a new MOV and fuse and the unit catches fire later, or if there's invisible damage to the logic chips that causes a failure next week, they’re on the hook. From thier perspective, the only way to guarantee the fix is to replace the entire PCB. It’s expensive, but it’s the standard industry practice. If you're handy with a soldering iron or know an electronics hobbyist, those boards might actualy be salvageable for a few dollars in parts. You’d need to clean off the soot with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol first to see if the copper traces on the board are still intact. If the board itself is physically burned trough or carbonized, it can actually become conductive and start a fire even after you replace the parts. That’s usually the point where the board becomes junk.

But before you drop thousands on seven new motherboards, you really need to figure out why this happened. If you don't have a **whole-house surge protector** installed at your main electrical panel, you're just inviting this to happen again. Check if any other appliances in the house are acting weird—clocks resetting, microwave display flickering, or your fridge acting up. Surges usually leave a trail of destruction, though AC units are often the first to go because their outdoor components are basicly giant lightning rods.

That whole-house surge protector thing sounds like a lifesaver, but is it somethig a regular person can install or do I need a pro for that? I’m also wondering if homeowners insurance woud even cover something like this. Seven motherboards at once is basically a down payment on a house!

If it was a surge, would my other stuff like my TV or computer be fried too? I haven't noticed anything else acting weird yet, but now I’m paranoid about every outlet in my place.

Insurance ussually covers this, but you'll need the tech to write a formal report stating it was surge damage. As for the TV, some modern power supplies are acutally surprisingly beefy compared to the cheap boards in indoor units. Plus, if your ACs are on a 220V circuit, a surge on one leg of your service can hit them while your 110V outlets stay relatively safe. definatly hire a sparky for the panel surge protector—messing with the main lugs isn't worth the risk of getting toasted.

You shold defintely have that tech check the outdoor unit too. Usually, with multi-split setups, the main board in the condenser is the first thing in line for a power spike. It would be a nightmare to fix all seven indoor boards just to find out the brain outside is toast. Also, pro tip if you're filing an insurance claim: do not let the repairman throw those old boards away. Adjusters are notorious for wanting to see the actual burnt parts to prove it was a surge and not just wear and tear. Having a pile of seven crispy motherboards is pretty undeniable proof.
