I’m currently living in a top floor condo with a south-facing bedroom and it gets absolutely brutal in the summer. I’ve gone trough so many portable units over the years and they ussually suck or make way too much noise. I just picked up that massive Hisense tower from Costco becuase I heard it's the one to beat. It’s seriously huge, like a giant monolith sitting in the room, but the footprint isn't actualy that bad. The main thing is how quiet it is. I can barely tell when the compressor kicks on, which is a huge change from my old Midea Duo that used to thunk and beep at all hours. This thing supposedly only costs about sixty bucks a year to run according to the sticker and it cools the room down to 66 degrees in no time at all. It's way more powerful than any fan I've used. Has anyone else tried this specific HIAP0825TWD model or found something even better? It was pretty pricey and it's heavy as hell to move, but the window kit was actually easy to put together for once. I’m wondering if there are any long-term issues I shoud watch out for since it feels almost too good to be true.

The main reason that unit is so massive compared to others is the **inverter compressor** technology. Most older or cheaper portable units use a standard single-speed compressor that is either 100% on or 100% off. That is where you get that annoying thunk and the constant temperature swings you mentioned with your old Midea. This Hisense tower uses a variable-speed inverter, wich is why it stays so quiet and keeps the temp stable without breaking a sweat. It is basicly the same tech used in high-end mini-splits but crammed into a vertical box. Comparing it to the Midea Duo is interesting becasue the Duo was the gold standard for a bit due to the hose-in-hose design. But the Hisense tower handles the heat exchange differently, and the build quality on the window kit makes a massive difference in efficiency. If your window seal is leaking even a little bit of that south-facing heat back in, the BTU rating is irrelevant. This specific kit is surprisingly robust and seals better than most generic plastic sliders.
You should check if your specific Costco model has the heat pump function. There are two versions of this monolith: one that is AC only and one that does supplemental heating. If you have the heat pump version, it is acutally a decent way to take the edge off in the fall before you have to turn on the building heat. But keep in mind that portable heat pumps lose efficiency fast once it drops below 40 degrees outside.
The real long-term issue to watch for with these vertical units is the air filters. Since it is so tall and sits low, it pulls in alot of dust and hair from the floor level. You will want to pull those filters every two weeks if you have pets or carpet. If that evaporator coil gets gunky, that silent compressor is going to start straining and getting louder over the next two seasons. Keep the fins clean and it should last you a good five years or more.
I’m seriously considering grabbing one of these this weekend. Does it handle the condensation well, or do you have to drain it constantly? My last portable unit would shut off in the middle of the night because the internal tank was full, and it was a total mess trying to empty it.
Also, since it’s so tall and thin, is it acutally stable on carpet? I’m paranoid about my dog bumping into it and knocking the whole thing over since you mentioned it’s "heavy as hell."
Regarding the stability, it has a surprisingly low center of gravity since the compressor is tucked at the very bottom, so it’s way more stable on carpet than those top-heavy cheap units. Unless your dog is a Great Dane, it shouldn't budge.
One pro-tip for these specific Hisense towers: grab an insulated hose sleeve. Even with that great window kit, the exhaust hose gets scorching hot and radiates heat right back into your cool room. Wrapping it helps the inverter stay in low-power mode longer, which saves you even more on that power bill. Just make sure the hose stays as short and straight as posible to keep the airflow unrestricted.
I have the same unit and the Wi-Fi setup was actually a surprise win. usally, those smart home apps are garbage, but being able to kick it on from the office so the room is freezing by the time I get home is a game changer.
For the person asking about drainage, it has an auto-evaporation feature that handles most of it, but if your area is super humid, you'll still need the hose. I ended up routing mine into a large bucket becasue that bottom drain plug is way too low to the floor to get a tray under it easily. It’s a bit of a design flaw, but an easy fix.
One thing people overlook with this tower is the actual SACC rating. It’s listed as 10,000 BTU SACC, wich is a much more realistic measurement than the old ASHRAE ratings you see on cheaper units. That’s why it feels like it’s outperforming "14,000 BTU" units from five years ago. Also, keep an eye on the hose length. beacuse the unit is so tall, the hose itself is slightly shorter than what comes with the squat Midea units. If your windows are set particularly high, you might have to put the unit on a small riser, though that might mess with the stability. Just make sure you don't use a generic dryer vent extension—the friction loss will kill the inverter's efficiency.
