Is it actually better to lift my portable AC up to the window sill?

I picked up a mobile AC yesterday because this heat wave is killing me, but I'm honestly struggling with the standard hose setup. It feels like for every bit of cold air I get, the exhaust duct is radiating a ton of heat back into the room. I noticed that the back of my unit has both the hot intake and the exhaust vent right there, so I was wondering if it makes sense to just build a makeshift stand to put the whole thing level with the window. My plan is to use some old storage bins or a wooden board to get it high enough so the back is flush against the screen. I figured I coud just drop the roller shutters down to seal the gap and maybe use some cardboard for the sides. Does anyone know if this acutally improves the efficiency much? I'm worried about the exhaust air getting sucked right back into the intake since they're so close together, but it has to be better than having that massive hot tube snaking across my floor. It seems like alot less work than buying a proper window kit, plus I'd be able to keep the mosquito screen on. I just don't want to break the unit or cause some weird pressure issue in the room by blocking off the window like that. Has anyone tried a mount like this before?


Moving the unit right up to the window is the single best modification you can do for a single-hose portable AC. Those exhaust ducts act like a massive radiator, often reaching 50 or 60 degrees Celsius, which cancels out a huge chunk of the cooling power. Getting that back panel flush against the window screen removes the hose entirely and instantly stops that heat from leaking back into your living space.

You are right to be slightly concerned about the **short-circuiting** effect where the hot exhaust gets pulled back into the intake. Since the vents are ussually right next to each other on the back, you should tape a small piece of stiff cardboard or a plastic divider between the two vents. This acts as a baffle to force the hot air straight out while the intake pulls from the surrounding gap. Even if you don't do this, the efficiency gain from losing the hot hose almost always outweighs the small amount of recirculated air.

Make sure your makeshift stand is extremely stable. Storage bins can sometimes flex or buckle under the weight once the compressor kicks in and starts vibrating. A sturdy wooden crate or a small table is much safer. You also need to check the position of the **condensate drain** plug. If the unit isn't perfectly level or if it tilts slightly backward toward the window, you might find water dripping down your wall or into the window frame instead of the internal tank. Using the roller shutters to seal the gap is a solid plan. Just ensure the cardboard you use for the sides is thick enough to handle the **negative pressure**. Since the AC is constantly pumping air out of the room, it will try to suck hot air back in through every tiny crack around that window. If you seal it tight with some duct tape or weather stripping, you'll notice a massive difference in how fast the room actually stays cool.

Don't trust those plastic bins. I've seen more than one cheap bin crack and send a unit crashing down mid-cycle. Back in the 80s, we'd just bolt a piece of 3/4 inch plywood to a heavy-duty sawhorse or build a proper frame out of 2x4s. These modern portables are top-heavy and they’ll walk right off a slick surface if you don’t secure 'em.

Also, check your intake filters once a week if you're pulling air that close to the screen—bugs and cottonwood will clog those fins faster than you think. A dirty coil is a sure way to kill a compressor before the season is even over.
