Why does my portable AC keep running even when the room feels freezing?

I've been using this portable unit for a few months now and it's starting to drive me a bit crazy. Even when I set the thermostat to 22 or 23 degrees, the compressor just never seems to kick off. It stays in full cooling mode forever, and the display on the unit acutally shows the temperature climbing higher and higher the longer it runs, even though I'm sitting here in a sweater because it's so cold in the room. It's like the machine is totally disconnected from the actual air temperature in my bedroom. I suspect the sensor might be getting blasted by the heat from the exhaust pipe or somthing inside the casing, but I'm not sure if that's even possible. Does anyone know if these sensors are just poorly placed or if there's a way to recalibrate them? I ended up taking a peek inside and found the little thermistor wire tucked deep into a plastic tube right near the hot internal components. It seems like such a wierd spot for it. Has anyone tried moving theirs to the outside of the frame so it actually reads the room air properly?


Portable air conditioners are notoriously bad for this beacuse they try to pack an entire refrigeration cycle into a tiny plastic shell. What you're seeing is heat soak from the exhaust shroud affecting the internal thermistor. Even though the unit is blowing cold air out the front, the internal components and the exhaust hose get incredibly hot, and if that sensor is tucked into a tube near the back, it’s basically sitting in an oven. The machine thinks the room is 30 degrees even when you're shivering at 20. Moving that thermistor to the outside of the chassis is the most effective DIY fix. I've done the same thing on a few budget units where the sensor was buried right next to the compressor housing. Just make sure you don't place it directly in the path of the cold air intake or the discharge louvers, or you'll get short-cycling where the unit shuts off every two minutes. You want it positioned where it can sense the **ambient air** being drawn into the filter without being influenced by the internal heat or the immediate cold blast.

Before you go full surgical on the unit, check if your remote has a feature called **iFeel** or **Follow Me**. alot of newer Midea or Danby units have a sensor built into the remote control itself. When you turn that on, the unit ignores its internal sensor and waits for a signal from the remote. It solves the exact problem you're describing without needing to pull the casing apart, provided you keep the remote across the room from the unit.

If you end up upgrading to a window unit or a mini-split down the line, you'll notice they don't realy have this issue. Window units hang half thier guts outside, and mini-splits use much more sophisticated logic and better sensor placement. But for these single-hose portables, relocating the sensor is often the only way to get them to behave like a normal thermostat.

Seen this a thousand times with these new-age plastic buckets. Back in my day, we didn't deal with 'internal thermistors' tucked in a hot box; you had a mechanical thermostat on the front of a heavy window shaker and it just worked. If you're gonna move that sensor, wrap the exhaust hose in some foil-faced bubble wrap while you're at it. These single-hose units are just fighting themselves by design—sucking hot air in trough every crack in your windows while the compressor cooks the sensor. It's a losing battle unless you get some insulation on that pipe.

I'm totally new to this, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but is that 'iFeel' thing common on cheaper models? I have a basic unit and I don't see that button on my remote. If I have to try moving the sensor like you suggested, do I need to solder anything? I don't know much about electronics and I'm terrified of breaking the whole thing or getting a shock. Also, does the foil wrap actualy help with the temperture reading or is that just to stop the room from getting hot? It sounds like these machines are way more complicated than I thougt.

Honestly, life is too short to play surgeon with a plastic box. If you're tired of the DIY hacks and inaccurate sensors, just grab a Midea Duo. It has an inverter compressor so it doesn't just blast on and off, plus it uses a hose-in-hose design that keeps the heat soak from happening in the first place. I had the same freezing-yet-hot display issue untill I switched. It actualy uses the remote sensor properly so you don't have to worry about where the internal thermistor is buried. Save yourself the headache and the foil wrap.

Oh wow, this is making so much sense now! I just got my first portable unit and I was wondering why it felt like a wind tunnel in here while the screen said 28 degrees. I'm definitly going to check my remote for that Follow Me button tonight! Quick question though for the experts—does the color of the unit matter at all for heat soak? Mine is matte black and it gets super hot to the touch when the sun hits it through the window. Would a white one actualy stay cooler or is the internal heat just too much regardless?
