Laundry seems like a mindless chore til something goes horribly wrong and you're looking at a smoking heap of metal. The most important thing I can tell you is to never, ever wash items that have been soaked in flammable liquids like gasoline, paint thinner, or even heavy cooking oils. Even if you think you've rinsed them out, the residual fumes can ignite when the motor works hard or the dryer gets up to temp. I’ve seen it happen more than once where a simple load of rags turns into a full-blown emergency in minutes. Always double-check those pockets for plastic lighters or rogue batteries before you hit the power button. It only takes one spark from a metallic object hitting the drum at high speed to cause a real problem. Keep your loads balanced so the motor doesn't overheat trying to spin a lopsided wet blanket. If you smell something acrid or see a hint of haze, pull the plug immediatly. It’s way better to have a soggy mess than a charred utility room.


I had a close call last year with my old Maytag top-loader. I was refinishing some oak chairs and used a bunch of rags with mineral spirits. I thougt I'd been smart by letting them sit in a bucket of soapy Dawn water overnight before tossing them in on a hot cycle. About twenty minutes in, the laundry room smelled like a chemical plant. I didn't see smoke, but the heat coming off the lid was terrifying. I ended up dragging the dripping mess out to the driveway in a galvanized tub.

Now I just treat those oily shop rags as single-use items. It’s not worth the five bucks to save a pack of towels from the hardware store. Also, the point about lighters is spot on. My nephew left a plastic Bic in his cargo shorts once, and the sound of it rattling against the stainless steel drum of our LG dryer sounded like a gunshot every time it hit. When I finally stopped the cycle, the casing had cracked and leaked fluid all over a load of towels. I'm just lucky the static didn't set the whole thing off.

Are we sure the heat coming off that Maytag lid was strictly the mineral spirits? Have you ruled out a clogged vent or a failing motor capacitor? Those old top-loaders shouldn't be radiating that much heat trough the metal casing unless somethig else is going on. I’ve seen folks get spooked by chemical smells when it’s actually just decades of lint buildup finally reaching a critical mass near the element. It’s easy to blame the rags, but if your utility room is getting that hot, you might want to check the airflow before assuming the soap didn't work.

People frequently underestimate the specific danger of drying rags contaminated with unsaturated vegetable oils or linseed oil, which can undergo exothermic oxidation and reach auto-ignition temperatures even without an external spark. I’ve observed that many modern high-efficiency dryers utilize such high-velocity airflow that a minor obstruction in the internal lint housing—not just the external ducting—creates a localized hotspot capable of igniting residual cooking oils trapped in the weave of a thick cotton towel. You relly ought to inspect the blower wheel housing annually because a thin film of grease mixed with fine particulate lint creates a highly flammable sludge that most folks never bother to check.

The real sleeper hazard is the 'Sanitize' cycle on these newer front-loaders like the Whirlpool WFW5620. People think it's for cleaning, but if there's any residual solvent, that internal heater is going to push temps way past what the drum seals are rated for. I’ve replaced more than a few melted door gaskets becuase someone tried to 'sanitize' shop clothes. If you're running a Speed Queen TC5, you’ve at least got a mechanical timer that won't get confused by a sensor shorting out, but it still won't save you from a flash fire if you ignore the 'no solvents' rule.
