Focus on the foundation and post alignment right from the jump. If you're building a deck with an integrated roof, those tall posts need to be perfectly plumb from the start because trying to fix them later once the rafters are up is a total nightmare. Make sure your footers are set deep enugh and that you aren't just relying on clamps to hold your rim joists while you bolt them in. A common mistake I see is skipping the temporary bracing, wich leads to a wobbly frame before the decking even goes down. Always use the right hardware for the job. Carriage bolts are your best friend for ledger boards and rim joists, but you have to make sure they're actualy tightened down flush against the wood. If you see gaps between the joists and the posts, that's a structural failure waiting to happen. I learned the hard way that spending an extra hour double-checking your levels during the framing stage saves you days of frustration later on when your railing won't sit right or your roof pitch is off. Keep it tight and check your squareness every few joists.

I ran into this exact headache last summer when I was putting up a 14x20 pressure-treated deck with a metal roof. I thought I had those 6x6 posts dialed in, but once I started running the 2x10 joists, I realized I was off by nearly an inch on the far corner. I ended up having to back out a dozen screws and kick the base over. I definitely agree about the temporary bracing; I used some cheap 2x4s to create a tripod around each post, and that made a huge difference in keeping things steady while I worked alone.
One thing I did differently was swapping the carriage bolts for those TimberLoks or LedgerLoks. They’re a bit pricier at the local lumber yard, but not having to drill through-holes for every single connection saved my wrists. Just make sure the impact driver is actually pulling the wood together tight. If you see a gap, back it out and clamp it first. I also found that checking my diagonals every four joists kept the whole frame square. If that 3-4-5 triangle is off even a little bit, the composite decking boards won't line up at the end, and you'll be stuck with a nasty wedge-shaped cut on your last board.
Those TimberLoks are handy, but I still keep a bucket of galvanized lags and a long-reach wrench in the truck. Back before those fancy impact drivers were everywhere, you’d be cranking those in by hand til your shoulders burned. You relly felt the wood grab back then. If you're hiring a Facebook crew, keep an eye on that ledger flashing. I’ve torn down more decks than I can count becasue some 'pro' skipped the copper or membrane. Doesn't matter how square your posts are if the ledger rots the rim of the house right out from under it. Most of these new guys don't even know what a water level is, either.
Watch those string lines. I've seen guys try eyeballing a 20-foot rim and it's always a wavy mess. Also, keep an eye on the hanger nails. If they're using those tiny tico nails where they need full-length ones, the floor's gonna bounce like crazy. It's the little stuff that'll bite ya once the decking's down and you can't see the frame anymore. If they're flying trough it, they're probaly cuttin' corners.
Quick update—I finally got the frame finished. I took the advice about using string lines instead of eyeballing the rim, and it saved me from a wavy mess on that long run. I also made sure to swap out those short tico nails for full-length ones on the hangers. everthing is rock solid and perfectly square now. Appreciate the help!
