Tips for custom pool decking that nobody talks about

When you're wrapping a deck around a custom pool, you relly have to account for how much water is going to be sitting on those boards. Most people just think about the splash zone, but it's the moisture trapped underneath the framing that rots things out fast. I always suggest using joist tape on every single piece of pressure-treated lumber before you even think about laying your finish wood. It adds a bit of time, but it saves you from a structural nightmare five years down the line when the constant humidity starts eating your screws. For the floor design, if you're doing something fancy like a herringbone or an inlay pattern, make sure you double up your joists where the boards meet. You need that extra surface area for nailing. I used to try and sister them togehter after the fact, but it’s way easier to plan those transition points during the initial framing. Also, go with high-end hidden fasteners if you can swing it. It keeps the surface smooth for bare feet and prevents those annoying puddles from forming around recessed screw heads. Don't forget to leave a tiny gap for expansion near the coping or the boards will buckle in the summer heat.


I went with Trex Protect tape on my build last spring after seeing some nasty rot on a neighbor’s three-year-old cedar platform. You aren't kidding about the moisture trap. Even with plenty of airflow underneath, the humidity coming off the water just clings to the underside of the frame. I spent an extra two days applying the tape to every joist and beam, but seeing the rain bead up on the ledger board gives me alot of peace of mind. For the fasteners, I actualy went with the CAMO Edge clips instead of traditional top-down screws. It keeps the surface totally flush, wich is a must for the kids running around barefoot. However, I learned the hard way about that gap near the coping. I left about 1/8 of an inch, but during a heatwave in July, a few of the boards expanded enought to actually push against the stone. If I were doing it over, I’d probly give it a full 1/4 inch at the transition points just to be safe. It’s a small detail, but it prevents the boards from bowing up when the sun hits them.

If you're dealing with a saltwater pool, you better be upgrading every single connector to 316 Stainless Steel. I've seen standard ZMAX G185 brackets fail in less than four years once the salt spray gets to work. It’s a massive price jump, but it’s the only way to guarentee structural integrity near the water.

Also, consider switching to a capped polymer like Azek Vintage Series instead of a standard composite. It stays roughly 30% cooler than wood-plastic blends, wich is a lifesaver when you're walking barefoot from the pool. If you’re going thru the effort of taping joists, don't bottleneck the build with boards that’ll just bake in the sun.

That's a lot of faith to put in tape and stainless. Have you ruled out the possibility that the joist tape might actually trap moisture against the wood if the seal isn't 100% perfect? I've seen a few teardowns where water got behind the tape and basically steamed the lumber. Also, regarding those hidden fasteners, are you sure they'll hold up if the boards start to cup from the constant pool splash? Sometimes a good old-fashioned face screw is the only thing that keeps a board from twisting when it’s constantly wet-dry-wet.
