Tips for crown-up framing that nobody talks about

Crowning your studs and joists is one of those things that seems obvious til you're staring at a stack of lumber and realize half the pile is twisted. I spent years just grabbing whatever was on top until I realized why my drywallers were always complaining about waves in the ceiling. You’ve got to take the time to sight every single piece. If it’s got a slight bow, you always point that crown up or out toward the exterior. Sight it right down the edge. Gravity eventually helps flatten out floor joists once the subfloor and furniture go in, but if you flip one the wrong way, you’re looking at a permanent hump that no amount of shimming will fix. For wall studs, pick the straightest ones for your corners and door openings. Save the slightly bowed stuff for the middle of a long run where it won't cause as much grief. It takes an extra twenty minutes at the start of the day, but it saves hours of frustration during the finish phase when everythign actualy lines up like it's supposed to.


I finally started being religious about crowning after a bathroom remodel last year where I used some 2x6 Douglas Fir from the local yard. I figured a 5-foot span for a shower wall wouldn't matter much, but I ended up with a 1/4-inch belly that made the subway tile look like a funhouse mirror. Now, I mark every stick with a heavy lumber crayon as soon as it comes off the truck. I use a Sharpie for the 'straight' ones so I don't mix them up when I'm reaching for headers or king studs.

I actually do things a bit differently for my kitchen walls. Instead of just pointing every crown out toward the exterior, I try to group similar bows together. If I have three studs in a row with a 1/8-inch crown, the drywall will at least flow smoothly over them. It's the sudden jumps from a dead-straight stud to a bowed one that relly kill the finish. Also, I’ve found that using a 4-foot Stabila level to check for twist while I'm sighting saves my hide on those corner posts. It adds some time to the morning, but it beats having to plane down a wall before the hangers show up.

While your method of grouping bows is logically sound for mitigating localized deflection, I’ve found that one must also remain hyper-vigilant regarding the moisture content of the specific lumber grade being utilized, as even a perfectly sighted crown can undergo significant lateral movement or 'crook' if the pith of the tree is off-center within the milling profile. I personally prefer to check the end grain on every stick to ensure the growth rings are oriented in a way that minimizes future cupping against the drywall surface, especially when dealing with the high-moisture kiln-dried stock typically found at big-box retailers wich tends to behave quite erratically once the HVAC system is finally commissioned.

If you're still fighting crowns on tall walls or kitchen runs, you're wasting time. I switched to Boise Cascade Versa-Lam LVLs for all my headers and king studs years ago. If the client has the budget, I’m spec’ing LP SolidStart LSLs for the whole kitchen wet wall. They’re dead nuts straight every time, no sighting required.

For the rest of the stick-frame, I keep a Keson L600 lumber crayon in my pocket. If a joist has more than a 1/4-inch crown over 12 feet, it gets set aside for blocking. Life’s too short to fight twisted Douglas Fir when better engineered options exist for the high-tolerance spots.

Quick update—I actualy tried swapping in some LSLs for a kitchen run like suggested, and man, that made the cabinet install a dream. But I'm still struggling with that moisture issue on the standard dimensional stuff. Even when I crown them right, they seem to twist as they dry out on-site. Does anyone here use a moisture meter before framing, or is that overkill for residential?
