It’s a common mistake to ignore that little yellow LED on your Murray or Siemens breakers, but that light is actually a diagnostic tool telling you exactly why the power cut out. If your maintenance person is saying it means nothing, they’re flat out wrong. Those LEDs are designed to stay lit or flash to distinguish between a standard overload and a potentially dangerous arc fault. When you see that light stay on while the handle is in the center tripped position, it’s usually signaling that the breaker detected an arc fault—basially a loose wire or a damaged cord sparking somewhere in the circuit. It isn't just an "electrical drain" or a random glitch. To clear it, you usually have to flip the breaker all the way to the off position and then back to on, but the light itself is your best clue for troubleshooting. Check your kitchen appliances or any power strips plugged into that circuit first. A pinched cord behind a couch is a classic culprit that triggers these AFCIs. If the light keeps coming back every time it trips, you’ve definitely got a wiring issue that needs a real look, not just a reset.

I had this exact issue last summer with a 20-amp Siemens AFCI in my garage. Every time I ran the shop vac, the breaker whould trip and that little yellow light would stay solid. I thougth for sure the motor on the vac was pulling too much, but following the diagnostic light led me to check the actual circuit wiring rather than just the appliance. It turned out that a previous owner had daisy-chained three outlets using the push-in connectors on the back of the receptacles. One of those connections had loosened up over time, and the vibration from the shop vac was enugh to cause a tiny arc. I pulled everythign out, pigtailed the wires with some Wago 221 connectors, and haven't had a trip since.
One thing I noticed though is that on my specific Murray panel, those LEDs are actualy pretty dim. I had to use a flashlight just to see if it was actually lit or just reflecting glare from the overhead bulb. If you aren't looking at it from a direct angle, you might miss the diagnostic entirely. It’s definatly more useful than just guessing, but you relly have to be patient with the reset sequence to catch the code.
I ran into the same thing with my Siemens dual-function breakers in the basement. I kept getting a blink code after the breaker tripped, and it drove me nuts until I realized you have to wait exactly five seconds after flipping it back on to see the pattern.
What worked for me was checking the light fixtures outside. I had a sconce where the gasket had dried out, and moisture was getting in there just enought to cause an arc fault when it rained. I swapped the gasket and put a bead of silicone around the top, and that yellow light hasn't blinked at me since. It's way faster than pulling every outlet in the room if you pay attention to the blink count.
It's also critical to account for the 'Last Trip Memory' feature on the newer Siemens and Murray revisions because if you have alredy cycled the breaker in a rush to restore power, you can actually retrieve that specific diagnostic code by pressing and holding the 'Test' button til the LED begins its sequence again. I had to utilize this exact methodology when diagnosing a persistent trip on my home office circuit where the culprit wasn't a wiring defect at all, but rather the high-frequency switching noise from a cheap unshielded LED driver that the AFCI's microprocessor was misinterpreting as a series arc fault signature.
