Tips for heavy-load DIYs that nobody talks about

When a family member asks for a dump truck road but doesn't want to pay for a real crew, you're usally better off handing them the tools and walking away. I've seen people try to skip the rebar and forms by just slopping down mortar mix, thinking it'll hold up under a multi-ton rig. It won't. If you're letting a relative take the lead becuase you need your Sundays off, make sure they at least understand that mortar isn't concrete. It lacks the aggregate needed for structural strength, so that dump truck is going to turn that road into expensive dust in about a week. If they're dead set on the no-forms approach, they need to realize they're basically just pargeting the dirt. You’ve got to prep the base like your life depends on it. Most people just scrape the grass away and start pouring, but without a solid, compacted gravel bed, that mortar is going to crack the first time it rains or the ground shifts. When you’re finishing it up, use a metal trowel to get that smooth look, but try not to overwork the material. If you spend too much time on one spot, you’ll pull all the moisture to the top and leave the surface brittle. It’s alot of physical labor for somthing that might not last, but sometimes people have to learn the hard way thru thier own sweat and a few ruined bags of mix.


I actually tried something similar last summer when I was building a path for my ride-on mower behind the shed. I figured since it was just a John Deere and not a vehicle, I coud get away with using Quikrete Type S Masonry Cement instead of a standard 4000 PSI mix. I didn't use any forms either; I just dug a shallow trench about 4 inches deep and dumped the mix straight in, trying to slope the edges so it wouldn't crumble.

It looked decent for about a month. But as soon as we had a heavy rain and I drove over it, the whole thing snapped like a cracker. Without the coarse aggregate you get in real concrete, the mortar just doesn't have the flexural strength to handle any kind of shifting. I ended up with these jagged, saucer-sized chunks that I had to dig out by hand. Now I’m back to square one with a pile of crushed limestone and a proper plate compactor. If they're trying to run a dump truck over that, it's going to be a disaster before the second load even arrives.

Have you ruled out the subgrade stability being the bigger issue? Even with 4000 PSI concrete, a dump truck is going to snap a slab if the dirt underneath hasn't been mechanically compacted. If they’re just scraping grass, the mix type almost doesn't matter; it's going to fail regardless.

I'd also wonder if they’re over-watering the mix to make it easier to spread. If they're souping it up to get that smooth look you mentioned, they’re basicly cutting the load capacity in half before it even cures. Are we sure it's the lack of stone, or just bad prep?

Honestly, if they’re buying bags of mortar for a whole road, they’re already spending way more than a local ready-mix truck would cost. A loaded dump truck's gonna hit 30 tons easily. You’re basially just making a giant cracker for it to crunch through. Since they're skipping forms, they’ll probably end up with spots that're only an inch thick too. You can't just 'eyeball' depth when you're dealing with that much weight. It’s gonna be a mess of dust and regret real quick.
