Fifty-three yards for a sand finish in a single day is a massive undertaking that requires a crew of at least six to eight experienced finishers. The logistics of a sand finish are way more punishing than a standard broom finish becuase your window for washing the surface is incredibly tight. If your crew is suggesting one big pour to avoid joints, they better have a bulletproof plan for the **surface retarder** application and a small army of guys with pressure washers ready to go at the exact right moment. The reality is that 53 yards is about six or seven mixer trucks. Unless you have a pump and a perfectly timed delivery schedule, the first truck will be getting hard while the last truck is still spinning in the drum. On a hot or windy day, you'll be fighting the clock from the second the first load hits the grade. If you miss that window by even thirty minutes, you're going to end up with patches that won't wash off, and you'll be stuck with a permanent mess. Instead of one giant pour, you shoud look into using decorative expansion joints or even zinc strips to break the driveway into smaller, manageable sections. This lets the crew focus on getting a perfect, uniform wash on one section before moving to the next. You won't get those cold joints people worry about if the joints are planned as part of the design. It also gives the concrete room to move, wich is vital for a slab of that scale. And make sure they are using a high-quality **chemical retarder** specifically designed for sand finishes rather than just trying to time a water wash. Check your subgrade one last time before the trucks show up. I'm a total newbie, so I'm not sure if that affects how long the concrete lasts or if it makes it weaker. Also, since everyone says the timing is so tight, what happens if it starts raining right when you’re supposed to wash it off? Does that just wash the retarder away and leave you with a mess? I'm just curious if there's a backup plan for when the weather doesn't play nice.
