He claimed he used to handle 36 truck loads for an 1,800 square meter slab with just him on the screed and five guys helping move the mud. It sounds like a total nightmare to me. How the hell do you acutally keep that pace up without the slab getting away from you or losing the finish? I’m looking at a 1,200m2 pour next month and I was planning on having at least three of us on the bars just to be safe. I'm worried I'm overthinking the crew size but hearing that makes me feel like I'm moving in slow motion. Is there some trick to managing that much volume or was he just pulling my leg about the timing? If the mix is hitting the ground every few minutes I don't see how one person physically keeps up with the screeding part without collapsing. My back hurts just thinking about it.

That old-timer is either feeding you a load of crap or he's conveniently forgetting that those slabs were probably wavy as a tin roof. To put it in perspective, 36 trucks at a standard 6 or 7 cubic meters each is over 200 cubes of mud. Trying to hand-screed 1,800 square meters with one guy isn't just a backbreaker; it's physically impossible if you want any kind of decent floor tolerance. Even with five guys raking and pulling for him, a single screeder whould be moving at a dead sprint for four hours straight without a single second to stand up straight.
If you're looking at a 1,200m2 pour next month, stick to your plan for three guys on the bars. On a commercial pour that size, you usually want a **laser screed** if you can get one in the budget. It takes the physical toll off the crew and ensures you aren't fighting the slump as the sun starts hitting the pad. If you're going old school with hand screeding, you need a rotation. One guy screeding that much volume alone will be completely spent before the first power trowel even touches the concrete, and that's when the real work of finishing starts. Managing that kind of volume is all about the **pour sequence** and your spacing with the batch plant. You need those trucks staggered so you have a constant flow but aren't sitting with five mixers idling in the sun getting hot. If the mix starts to set up in the truck becuase your screeder is lagging behind, your finish is going to be garbage. Don't let those 'glory days' stories get in your head. Most of those guys were pouring at a 180 slump with no regard for long-term cracking or levelness. Bring the extra help, keep your guys fresh, and focus on the timing of your expansion joints instead of trying to be a one-man hero.
I'm a bit skeptical of that timeline too, but have you ruled out the possibility that they were using a massive dose of retarder? Back in the day, some of those guys whould soup up the mix so much it would stay open for eight hours just so they coud take thier time. Even then, the logistics of one guy on the screed for 1,800 meters doesn't add up unless the tolerances were nonexistent. Have you checked if it was actualy a single continuous pour or if he's 'forgetting' they did it in long narrow strips with formwork helping the grade? One guy holding a straightedge for that many cubes sounds like a tall tale.

When you mention the laser screed, is that somthing a beginner can actualy rent and operate, or do you need a specialized crew for it? Also, what exactly does '180 slump' mean in terms of how the concrete feels? Is it like soup? I’m trying to learn the lingo so I don't look like a total deer in headlights when I talk to the plant manager next week.
I’ve done my fair share of big pours and honestly, the 'one guy on the screed' thing is a recipe for a hospital visit. What worked for me on a 1,000m2 warehouse floor was a vibrating strike-off. Forget hand-pulling that much mud; your back will give out by truck five. We ran two crews and swapped every hour. Also, make sure you have a designated 'mud boss' whose only job is talking to the drivers. If those trucks back up and start getting hot, you're dead. I’d definatly stick with your three guys on the bars—fresh arms are the only reason my last slab acutally came out flat.
