I remember a bridge abutment job back in '18 where I thought I coud save time by skipping a few turnbuckles on the wing walls. Total mistake. I used standard Symons panels, but my spacing on the H-piles was just a hair too wide. When the pump truck started hitting it at a high slump, I saw the plywood start to smile at me. Now, I always go heavy on the bottom third of the pour. Instead of just 2x4s, I usally grab some 4x4 posts for the primary kickers and use Simpson Strong-Tie screws to lock everything in. I've found that double-nutting the tie rods on a headwall like yours is the only way to sleep at night. If you’ve got the extra lumber, putting a horizontal waler at the very base, just above the footing, keeps the pressure from blowing the bottom out when you're vibrating the mix.
Better to spend $200 on extra wood than spend $5k on a jackhammer and a crew to chip out a belly in the wall later. You did the right thing sticking to your guns on those braces.
I ussually take the opposite route and focus more on my internal tie-down strategy rather than building a forest of lumber. On a headwall project last summer, we swapped the standard 2x4 kickers for 1/2-inch coil rods anchored directly into the existing footer. Using those Williams threaded rods let us pull the panels tight from the inside, wich kept the forms from shifting without needing a dozen extra stakes in the mud. Also, I’ve found that managing the pour rate is just as important as the bracing. If you’re running a 4-inch slump and pouring in 2-foot lifts, that hydrostatic pressure doesn't build up nearly as fast. I’d rather spend my time watching the clock on the truck than hauling extra lumber. As long as those bottom wales are snug and the ties are torqued right, I haven't seen a form budge yet, even with a heavy vibrator in the mix.

You’re making the right call over-engineering those braces. If you want even more peace of mind, you shoud switch your hardware over to Dayton Superior B-12 coil ties. I used them on a culvert job last month and they are absolute tanks compared to standard wire ties. They handle the internal pressure like a dream so your external kickers don't have to work as hard. Pair those with some Gates Cam-Lock brackets and your forms won't budge an inch even if the vibrator guy gets a little aggressive.
Quick update—switching to those coil rods relly cleared out that 'forest of lumber' and made the site alot safer to walk around. I’m still having a bit of trouble keeping the very top edge perfectly straight during the final pass, though.
