Is it normal for my crew to call me out for refusing to jump in a 6-foot trench?

We’ve got a hole dug out right next to a concrete edge for some utility work, and it’s sitting at about 70 inches deep right now. The walls are basically vertical and the soil is realy dry and rocky with alot of loose debris falling back in from the layered earth. I told the guys I’m not getting in there without some kind of shoring or a trench box beacuse it looks like a total death trap. Now I’m catching a lot of heat from the other guys on site who are calling me a pussy and saying they’d have been finished already. They think because it's just a narrow hole it isn't a big deal, but 70 inches is over my head and that's a lot of weight if those walls decide to give way. Am I just being paranoid here or are these guys being reckless? I’ve seen enought horror stories about trench collapses to be wary, but they’re acting like I’m the crazy one for wanting to follow safety. I just wanted to see if this kind of pressure is common or if I should just suck it up.


A cubic yard of dirt weighs about 3,000 pounds. When a trench wall collapses, it doesn't give you a warning or a chance to jump out; it just happens in a fraction of a second. At 70 inches deep, you're well past the 5-foot mark where OSHA requires shoring, shielding, or sloping. If that dry, rocky soil decides to shift, you're looking at thousands of pounds of pressure hitting your chest, wich makes it impossible to breathe even if your head is above the dirt. Those guys giving you heat are the exact reason why trench fatalities are still so common in this trade. There's an old saying that there are old workers and bold workers, but no **old, bold workers**. I've been on sites where the tough guys skipped the box to save twenty minutes and ended up in a casket. It's easy for them to talk trash when the walls are still standing, but they won't be the ones paying your funeral costs or supporting your family.

Dry, rocky soil with loose debris is actually more deceptive than wet clay sometimes becasue those rocks act like ball bearings. If you’re seeing stuff sloughing off the walls allready, the structural integrity is garbage. You need a **trench box** or you need to slope those walls back at a 1.5:1 ratio if you have the room. If the company won't provide the gear, they're essentially asking you to gamble your life for an hourly wage.

Don't let the peer pressure get to you. It is your right to refuse unsafe work, and a 6-foot deep vertical cut in loose soil is the definition of a death trap. If they want to be reckless and risk it, that's on them, but you're making the right call. The industry is full of guys who think safety is for the weak right up untill the moment the ground swallows them.

Spot on. Those guys are idiots. One thing people always forget with dry, rocky soil is the vibration factor. If you've got heavy equipment running nearby or even just a busy road within fifty feet, those 'ball bearing' rocks the other guy mentioned will vibrated loose even faster. It doesn't take a massive shift to trigger a cave-in; just a little bit of constant humming from a backhoe can rattle that loose debris enought to bring the whole wall down on you. Stay out of that hole.

The presence of that concrete edge is actualy far more insidious than your coworkers realize becuase it exerts a significant surcharge load on the adjacent soil column, effectively increasing the lateral earth pressure and making a catastrophic shear failure substantially more likely than if you were working in an open field. Furthermore, the interface between the poured slab and the native soil often acts as a preferential flow path for moisture, which can lead to hidden desiccation cracks or voids that compromise the structural integrity of the vertical face in ways that aren't imediately visible. If those guys want to ignore the physics of cantilevered loads and soil mechanics, let them, but staying out is the only logical choice here.

Oh man, reading this makes my heart race! I just started my first job as a helper last week and the amount of stuff to learn is insane. You're defintely doing the right thing staying out of there. Safety first always! Quick question for the pros though—since we're talking about digging, has anyone here ever accidentally hit an unmarked gas line even after getting a clear from 811? I'm terrified of that happening while I'm learning the excavator!

Listen to your gut. I remember back in '82 we didn't have half the fancy boxes they got now, so we used to shore up with heavy timber and hydraulic jacks. It took all damn day but I'm still here to talk about it. Those kids calling you names are usally the first ones to freeze up when the dirt starts moving. If you got a concrete edge right there, that slab is just waiting to act like a guillotine. I've seen a guy get pinned by a chunk of 'stable' earth no bigger than a toolbox and it still cracked his ribs like dry kindling. Tell 'em to pipe down or grab a shovel and slope it back the old-fashioned way.

Update: Thanks for the reality check. That point about the concrete edge acting as a surcharge load relly hit home once I saw a hairline crack forming right under it. I showed the foreman the 5-foot OSHA rule and he finally shut up and ordered a box. Glad I didn't listen to those guys; it defintely wasn't worth my life.
