Is it normal to use this many metal hangers on a residential deck?

The crew next door has been working on a new build all week, and it looks alot beefier than anything I've seen in our neighborhood. They’re using these massive timber beams and every single connection point has a metal joist hanger or some kind of thick fastener. My current deck is about twenty years old and looks like a total mess compared to this, so I’m seriously considering asking them for a quote. The thing is, I can't tell if this is just high-quality work or if they're charging for stuff I don't realy need. I’ve heard mixed things about wheather you need that much hardware for a basic backyard setup. They even have the stairs reinforced with similar brackets. It definatly looks solid, but I’m a bit worried about the cost of all that extra lumber and metal. Does this look like the right way to build for longevity, or is it just unnecessary weight?


What you’re seeing is likely a shift toward modern building codes that prioritize mechanical connections over just nailing things together. For a long time, builders relied on 'old school' methods like toe-nailing or using a few lag bolts, but those are exactly the decks that fail after twenty years. Seeing alot of metal hardware like joist hangers and post-to-beam connectors is actually a great sign. It means the load is being transferred directly through the hardware and into the posts, rather than just relying on the shear strength of a few nails that can rust or pull out over time.

The 'beefy' look usually comes from using a **dropped beam** design where the joists sit on top of a massive beam, rather than just hanging off the side of it with a rim joist. It’s a much more robust way to build because you aren't fighting gravity at the connection points; the weight of the deck is pushing straight down onto the wood. If they are also using heavy-duty brackets on the stairs, they’re addressing the most common point of failure. Most people just nail the stringers to the frame, which eventually pulls away and causes the stairs to sag or collapse. But you should check how they’re attaching the ledger board to the house. Even if the rest of the deck looks like a tank, if the ledger isn't bolted correctly with staggered structural screws or through-bolts, that's the weakest link. A lot of crews get the 'pretty' hardware right but skimp on the house connection because it’s harder to do properly. If they’re using tension ties or lateral load connectors there, then they relly know thier stuff.

And honestly, the cost of that extra metal and lumber is a drop in the bucket compared to the labor. You might spend a few hundred dollars more on high-quality Simpson ties or thicker timber, but it adds a decade or more to the lifespan of the structure. I’d definitely ask them for a quote, but make sure they’re following an engineered plan or at least the prescriptive deck codes. If they’re building it that solid, they’re probaly the type of crew that actually pulls permits and passes permits.

Seen plenty of those "tank" decks lately. Back when I started, we were lucky to get a 4x4 post and some 16d nails to hold. We’d notch the posts to seat the beams, but code guys hate that now. All that metal hardware is a lifesaver, honestly. I remember my first tear-out where the ledger was just held on by spit and a few rusty nails—pure miracle it stayed up. If these guys are using 6x6s and proper flashing, they’re light years ahead of the hacks I worked with in the 80s. Just make sure they use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless. The newer pressure-treated chemicals eat trough regular zinc bolts like candy.

I'm looking at my old deck now and it defintely doesn't have any of those metal brackets. I didn't even know they were called 'joist hangers' untill reading this! I'm curious, if the crew is using those massive 6x6 posts, does that mean they have to dig deeper holes or use more concrete? My current posts are pretty thin and they're starting to lean. I don't know much about the 'ledger' part mentioned, but is that somethig I can see from underneath or is it hidden behind the siding? I'd love to know what to look for before I talk to them.
