Is it normal to use actual downspouts for power poles?

My office recently added a new cluster of desks and the maintenance guys needed a way to drop power and ethernet down from the ceiling. Instead of getting one of those official modular power poles, they just used a standard white gutter downspout. They've got the blue data cables and the electrical lines all squeezed through the same metal tube with outlets mounted right onto the sides of it. It honestly looks like a DIY job and I'm a bit worried about the safety aspect of it. I'm curious if this is even remotely up to code because it seems like the sharp metal edges of the downspout could eventually cut into the wire insulation. Should I be reaching out to the building inspector or maybe a professional electrician to check this out? The whole setup feels a little sketchy for a professional workspace and I don't want to be the person who causes a fire, but I'm not sure who has the authority to tell the company they can't do this. Does anyone know if there are specific rules against using rain drainage hardware for interior wiring?


Using a rain gutter downspout as a power pole is a massive violation of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Specifically, Article 300.3(A) requires that conductors be installed in recognized raceways or cable assemblies. A downspout is absolutely not a listed raceway. becasue it hasn't been tested or **UL listed** for electrical use, it lacks the neccessary fire ratings and structural integrity to protect those wires from physical damage. You are spot on about the sharp edges. Standard electrical conduit and power poles have bushings or rounded entries to prevent the metal from slicing through the insulation over time. Aluminum downspouts are thin and prone to bending; one person hitting that with an office chair could crush the metal into the conductors, leading to a short circuit or a fire. Plus, you can't just mix high-voltage electrical and low-voltage data cables in the same tube without a physical divider unless the insulation is rated for the highest voltage present, which is rarely the case in these DIY setups. This creates a serious interference issue for the internet and a potential safety risk if the power line faults onto the Ethernet cables. Since this is a commercial workspace, you shoud definitely raise a stink. The local building department or the **Fire Marshal** would have a field day with this. In most jurisdictions, the Fire Marshal is acutally the fastest way to get things fixed because they have the authority to shut down a space that presents an immediate fire hazard.

If you don't want to go straight to the city, show your boss the 'listed and labeled' requirements in the NEC. Any proffesional electrician would refuse to touch that setup unless they were there to rip it out and replace it with a proper **Tele-Power pole** from a brand like Hubbell or Wiremold. Those official poles aren't even that expensive, so your company is risking a massive liability suit just to save a couple hundred bucks.

I strongly suspect those maintenance workers neglected to ensure the downspout is properly bonded to the equipment grounding conductor, creating a scenario where a hot wire chafing against an un-deburred edge could energize the entire metallic exterior without ever tripping a breaker. In any legitimate installation, metallic enclosures must be electrically continuous and bonded to ground to facilitate the rapid opening of the overcurrent protective device during a ground fault, yet this makeshift assembly likely lacks any such safety path. Furthermore, I’d bet those outlets aren't even housed in proper internal boxes, meaning the thin-gauge aluminum is the only thing providing structural support against the mechanical stress of repeated plugging and unplugging, wich is absolutely negligent.

That setup is a total disaster waiting to happen. If you want to fix this the right way before the Fire Marshal walks in, just tell your boss to buy a Wiremold Tele-Power Pole. I’ve installed the Wiremold 25DTP-4 series in dozens of offices and they are specifically designed for this exact scenario. They come with the proper internal dividers to keep your power and data separated and they’re actualy UL listed for the job. It looks way more proffesional than a gutter and you won't have to worry about the building burning down becuase of some sharp aluminum edges.

I actually saw a shop do this once and it was a nightmare. They didn't even deburr the bottom hole where the cables came out. Within six months, the data guys were back because the ethernet was dropping packets constantly. Turns out, just the vibration of the HVAC system caused the sharp metal to chew through the blue jackets. We ended up pulling it all out and just running proper 3/4 inch EMT. It took an afternoon and cost almost nothing at the hardware store. If you're seeing outlets screwed right into that thin aluminum, they're probably loose already. It's way easier to just do it right with real conduit.
