*guarantee* that what comes out on a printer will be *exactly* the same on all printers. Color rendition excepted.It is the ONLY way to send a document that guarantees the onscreen and printed pages are what was intended by the layout artist, using a third party viewer - a Quark XPress 'collection' including fonts layout and images will do the same if the recipient machine understands Quark of course, but even that needs to be converted to PostScript for actual paper printing
Given that the next most popular format - Microsoft Word - is not compatible with Microsoft Word - early versions cant read later files - it is the de facto way to distribute printable copy with an excellent chance that it can be read and printed as it was intended to be read and printed
But all bets are off when it comes to searchable text
