I run a local news server for my own use (leafnode) and currently collect news from 40 groups. I keep articles for a month (at least). It consumes 47Mb, not really a problem nowadays I would have thought.

Last time I tried a run-from-media newsreader in my local library, port 119 was blocked. FTP was also blocked, so I wouldn't be surprised if everything was blocked other than HTTP.
I'm using TB and ES. It must be your end.

It is an email and usenet client. It works quite well with Eternal September.
I couldn't manage to make tin work on Linux desktop. I had to set up an SSL tunnel and all that stuff.
Apparently Lynx should work as an usenet client too.
Eternal-September has something on Port 80.

That's what I do. I have Agent on a stick and move it between whichever computers I'm using at the time. (Little 32-bit dual boot netbook out here near the South Atlantic coast, since you asked.) The program files, all my outgoing messages since 2008, all the incoming messages I've chosen to save plus all the current messages before expiry are using less than 260Mb of space.

Many thanks, Problem solved and Google Groups have gone from my computer. Now have to get used to using TB for groups; I quite liked the Google version, until they decided to close it and the endless drug advertising.

Almost 30 years ago I accessed Usenet from my BBC Micro.
(although I wasn't storing messages locally, that was an Acorn RiscPC on the end of the modem link)
