Having used Google groups for many years to access this group (it is the only one I participate in) it seems that Google have decided to remove the service. Is anyone else in the same position ? Was wondering what you are moving to. I don't need a Usenet client per se just something to read and contribute here. Web based is fine as that's what I do now.
Thanks
Lee.

Most people use thunderbird and something like Eternal September, which is free.

Same situation for me. This evening I have set up an Eternal September account and installed Pan newsreader. Both free. Seems easier than GG already, tbh, and Pan has filtering available to get rid of the spam.

Paganini does not need an account, and is on port 119 as well. That's the default port, which is not protected in flight by SSL/TLS.
You can select "Download Original" at the top of the PostImage window, to get a higher resolution version of the image.

The threaded view would be a popular choice.

Thunderbird is available on more than one platform. Practical choices, for example...

linux-x86_64/ <=== If you are using Linux, the Package Manager has your software mac/ win64/
If you are on another computer type, your tree-herder will have built Thunderbird from source.
Once you have the one server set up and it is working OK, you can try your hand at some of the more "secured" server setups, that require the odd tweak here and there.
Usually, you try to have more than one server in the list on the left hand side, in case a server is down for maintenance.

Thanks very much all for your suggestions. I should have said that I almost exclusively access this from my phone so would need to either be a browser based solution or android app (although don't want it to cache all the messages locally).
I tried NovaBBS as suggested by John on the wiki but couldn't see where to set up the account. Also, how does this ID map to the user ID I currently use or will I have to start afresh?
Thanks
Lee

Those are what I'm using. However, today I found a message on Google Groups (due to disappear on 22 Feb) which answered my problem about my Garmin Etrex gps unit. The posting was not shown on the list from Eternal September as they have far less storage than the mighty Google.
I suggest everybody should scan the old messages on Google Groups for something interesting before it disappears.

The archived messages will not be disappearing ... nor will new usenet messages be added to the G2 archive.

Google Groups will remain but as a searchable repository, it is only posting access that is being withdrawn.

Old Usenet messages on Google Groups will remain. That includes anything posted before 22 Feb. What is being withdrawn is the copying of new and the posts from Usenet and ability to post to Usenet from Google Groups itself.

You get to configure the ID in most usenet client solutions - so just choose the same one.

Dunno, I've only tested nova/rslight as a guest ...
