And this is why we should leave the EU!

I disagree with the fact that none of them broke the law. All you have to do is to go into some certain non-go areas and ask for ID, but your corrupt police won't do that. And you can not say that EU migrants broke the law, as you imply. And after Brexit, I don't really see hordes of EU migrants wanting to come to Blighty illegally to peel potatoes.

'Performed'. I don't think composers get much subsidy. Opera lovers apparently don't love opera so much that they're prepared to pay the actual costs of performance.

No. Even Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas aren't considered *proper* operas. But there are some, just not as well-known and popular as the German and Italian hits. People seem to prefer operas where they can't understand the words, and have to learn the story before they see it. I think it's called 'sophistication'.

Britten's Peter Grimes is probably the most famous English opera, but most of the better-known British composers have written operas. They're just not really that popular a live art form here, possibly due to the cost.

Opera is how the socially and emotionally timid and inhibited middle classes get their taste of passion.

Sophisticated Panto sums it up.

I liked the couple of G&S' es I went to. I am not a 'sophisticated' person when it comes to the Arts.

Indeed. Very few 'arts' make money without taxpayer assistance, which is probably why Equity is run by Communists.

A ticket at "Teatro alla Scala" in Milan can cost several € k's. I doubt the English middle class can pay for that (and you pay in cash there, not Waitrose vouchers).

A night of booze and fights at the local Shitespoons is cheaper and more rewarding.

Please don't. The gammon density here is already way off the scale without you adding to it

It's highly relevant. Anyone who decides to become a foreigner just to avoid tax has no moral right to spout cobblers about the country he left.

Your PM's wife lives in UK but doesn't pay tax here. Not sure if this gets mentioned on GB news.

It's mentioned every day by the socialists, including the BBC.

Still lots of romanians come to do illegal activity.

"High Opera" drives me mad. I would *far* rather listen to 'gangsta rap' ANY DAY OF THE WEEK than Italian opera. Seriously, I just do not get see the point of it.

Just remind us, for the benefit of those of us under about 60 here, which side was Italy on in World War 2?

Opera can be very good and not in a snobbish way. In Italy, even the ordinary simple folks enjoy opera. You don't see that here.

I'm not sure many Brits classify themselves as ordinary and simple but have you seen the price of opera tickets in the UK?

All three of them

Myth.

Non Doms pay all the taxes due according to UK tax law on

*all* of their UK sourced income. They also pay VAT, council tax, fuel duty, etc .

They are simply excused any tax due on offshore income and/or profits (in many cases these are covered by reciprocal tax agreements anyway).

The top 1% of taxpayers, pay 29% of the total income tax take and I'll hazard a guess that Non Doms figure highly in that 1%. Lose those people and everyone else has to pay a lot more tax to make up the missing revenue.

This is why RAchel Reeves has decided that she is happy with the cap on bankers bonuses being lifted. She has done the maths, a £2 million bonus means a big tax receipt for the treasury.
