Over-engineering
A neighbour ripped out a stud wall and threw out some 2 x 4. We now have shelf supports that are literally as strong as the house. Plus a sawhorse that tested my meagre carpentry skills to the limit.

Fibre board adhesive.
The old car uses some form of wood based fibre board for the door cards and the instrument cover. Both covered in 'leather' so look OK when new. The instrument covers would warp within a few years...

Ping John Rumm
Some time ago, you were kind enough to supply me with a laptop at a very good price, which has done sterling service. It's an HP 350 G2, upgraded to a SSD. As is pretty common with these things, the...

Why are long drill bits so hard to find?
For example this 3mm HSS cobalt, 98mm long. Couldn't find a 4mm that length at all! plenty folk need to drill a hole through something thick before putting a screw right through and into the wood...

Barometers and average pressure
Why do barometers have different centre readings? I thought 1000 mbar was average, as that's what barometers always used to have as the central reading ("change"), but Wikipedia says it's 1013. I've...

Anyone got a laser engraver?
I could do with something that would mark text onto plastic. It would be light use. So wondering about a laser engraver. If anyone has one, which one and are you happy with it?

Water stains
Burst pipe caused water damage to ceiling, been drying out for last 4 days and the ceiling appears to be intact apart from water mark staining. I have ordered some stain block which I will use before...

Re: windscreens...
I'm guessing you mean resin stone chip repairs. If so, they're of very limited use. If there's even a single crack radiating even 1mm out from the chip, that crack will inevitably spread out, and UK...

Removing Hammerite
Have a cast brass number plate for outside a house. Type where edge and numbers are raised, and the background is recessed by around 5mm. Initially raised letters and borders were polished brass, and...

Joys of rural living.
This is proper rural living, not what Mumsnet calls rural living (anywhere Ocado won't deliver in Surrey). "Ken, who is in his 70s and lives off grid in a remote part of Lochaber, was injured when a...

Under cabinet striplight with its own shade - anyone seen such a thing?
I have quite a lot of t4 tube link lights and have an application for a couple more (I might migrate to LED but that's a distraction really). However this latest use won't hide the lamps behind a...
