In Canada you can buy "supplementary Insurance" too - that covers things the basic government plan doesn't - like drugs, dental, private care, hearing aids, and other "extras". The insurance companies sure haven't gone out of business up here.

Or people that buy insurance from the wrong companies - or the wrong coverage. The American system STINKS. ACA helped stem the stench a LITTLE BIT.

You meen like in a civilized country. (forget the "any other")

Nope, they have the same tax dodges there as you can see with Branson.

And there arent enough of them there to pay for the nhs anyway.

Yah, somebody has got to pay for the lazy slackers.

I've never received the flu shot and rarely get sick. Perhaps it's due to my cleansing/hygiene ritual of washing hands often and not touching my face until I do. Obviously, that simple procedure goes unheeded by the lemmings who run amok when the CDC/government tells them they are in danger.

FACT: Obamacare forced working Republicans to buy insurance for unemployed democrats...which is why Obamacare costs so much and covers so little.

There are huge deductibles. In the bronze plan the deductible is $6500 and cost my wife $1000 a month. I suppose if we wanted to pony up another $500 a month for the silver plan the deductible would be less but you are still out of pocket $18,000 before they pay a dime if there were no deductibles or co pays but there are.

Their billionaire donors are the same ones who paid the Democrats to create ACA. Nobody was going to derail the gravy train.

Doctors, Lawyers and Insurance companies.

ACA was written by health care lobbyists in Max Baucus' office according to Howard Dean DNC chair at the time.

This was still sold to us on a straight party line vote. They put a big enough welfare component into it to sell it to the most leftist Democrats and they still got to reward the donors by throwing money at all of them. Unfortunately if you are rich enough not to get welfare ($65,000 total income, far from actually being rich) this thing is a burden, not a help. All of the private providers pushed up their prices to about what ACA charges.

OK 9.4% for a guy making 1000 a week PLUS the 13.8% his employer deducted from his actual compensation (much like they do with FICA here) and that doesn't seem to have a salary cap for a 2% rate.

Thanks for confirming what I said. I just based it on the fact that they ousted Churchill the Conservative and put in a Labour party guy, Clement Attlee, in 1945. I was guessing parliament followed that lead.

Sorry mis spoke meant Medicare but Medicare comes out of the same tax the IRS collects and hands over to Medicare.

Just because Bernie says something does not make it true As you say "Cite that Bernie". I still say they ignore functions that come out of other budgets that private insurance has to eat. The time IRS, FBI and the OIG spends on investigating fraud and collecting the revenue is not cheap. They also seem pretty feckless at preventing that fraud. They admit to numbers in the 10-12% range but they really don't know how high it might be. You or Bob pointed out the TV is loaded with commercials saying "Buy this, Medicare will pay". That is true whether you really need it or not. That is just the people who actually get the item. Lots of time, there is no real patient and no real product. Medicare still pays the bill. The only way Medicare even finds out is if the person who actually holds that card sees a strange bill and reports it. A lot of old people never even see those bills. When they do get around to chasing these crooks down, they are usually long gone, DBA as someone else by then.

60 minutes and Frontline have both done shows about this where their TV journalists found crooks the FBI couldn't find or didn't try to find. Miami is a hot bed for this activity.

Clement Attlee was PM until 1951 when they took Churchill back. Shortly after that the US ran Truman out of town and elected Eisenhower.

I have an old IBM buddy who now sells medical equipment and he has the same kind of anecdotes.

The filthy rich will still be OK. I am sure there will be a loophole or two in that 5,000 page tax bill that makes them whole.

I am seriously thinking of getting rid of a bunch of zero basis IBM stock while I can get it pretty much tax free.

That wouldn't be the health insurance tax. It drops down to 2% once you get up around 50,000 pounds a year. OTOH the US is the opposite. The medicare part of FICA does not have a cap.

ACA was just a welfare program for anyone <400% of the poverty level. (87% of participants). Most people are in private plans from their employer or union. That 13% of ACA people who pay the whole nut themselves get screwed.

Rod pointed out, for a guy making 1000 a week, it is 9.4% plus the

13.5% the employer covers (with your sweat).

Not really on this particular tax. The rate drops to 2% what you make after around 50k a year. This is a middle class tax.

That is not really true. It was the dream but not the reality. The SCOTUS tossed the mandate so there are still people just taking their chances. (no insurance) If they are young, healthy and they are not in some horrible accident, it usually works out for them. Also the ACA policies that are even close to affordable don't cover much so you still need to have your credit card handy.

They generally can't take your house, your retirement money, one car and your personal items. There are people who work that bankruptcy angle pretty hard. Just look at OJ before he decided to be an armed robber.
