The "veered to avoid animal" story seems bullshit to me.  Where exactly did this "accidental" border crossing take place?  Please link to the location on google maps.

I suspect this is not the full set of facts behind the situation...as another said, one doesn't "veer" onto another entirely different simply road to avoid an elk or moose...

However, I'm one of the few people who just take any road that looks good to me. I figure 80, 90, maybe 99% try to stick to the road they are on tthat they know goes where they are going**, and if they saw an animla on the road, they'd just wait until it left. What kind of animal was it? Didn't it have to be somewhere. There's nothing to eat on the road, and no normal animal would sleep on the road***

The problem with Stumpie is that the benefit of the doubt used to go to the federal govt. even though of course they sometimes did someething wrong, or even terrible. Now I think the benefit of the doubt goes against it.

Speaking as a Canadian - yes, this is how the US operates it's border with Canada. No different than if it was a border with North Korea.

But in this case, a border crossing road like that should have been well marked with signs, and I understand that they should have a small booth, like a telephone booth, that you're supposed to stop at and have a voice or video call with a US customs agent.

I've searched around the net for more reports of this particular story, and none of them so far have reported where this couple is now or how this situation ended.

However, I must agree with your points about the other people and how far they drove down the side road. Most people would prudently stop and back out immediately due to uncertainty about deep mud & puncture hazards.

The whole story does sound a bit suspicious. I would like to know what the police found in everyone's 'afternoon' kit bags.

Also, it is not clear if the police were waiting down the side road or following them on the highway. If the latter, they should have seen the animal.

And I would advise *anyone* that road entrances such as described are probably covered 24/7 by one or more BPS IR HD streaming video devices.

I can see an error while meandering around the back roads, but there seems to be something missing here. No sign on the road at the border? Seems they should have just been turned around and sent back. What about the relatives there were with? If they carried their passports they could have legally entered.
