Have been replacing the bearings on a Cabrio washer and am fairly creeped out by the slime coating, particularly on the outside surface of the drum. Is there any known way to prevent this slime buildup? I don't really know what the slime is.

The democrats mandated washer manufacturers to use less water per load so you get what you got.
If the slime really bothers you, you'll need to get some "affresh" tablets and run the "Clean Washer with affresh" cycle as needed.

For front-loaders - HE detergent is usually recommended. When I replaced the tub on my old Frigidaire front loader - the repair guys that I consulted agreed with using HE. Also - using less detergent and/or extra rinse cycle might help. John T.
