I've dealt with this exact nightmare in my old place where a massive chest freezer was basically part of the foundation. First thing you need to know is that you absolutely cannot just take a saw to it while the refrigerant is still in there. It’s illegal and honestly pretty dangerous for your lungs if you hit a line. You have to call a local HVAC pro or an appliance recycler to come out and recover the gas first. They’ll hook up a vacuum pump and clear the lines so you’re legal and safe. Once they give you the green light and a tag saying it's empty, then you can get to work. Grab a Sawzall with a few long metal-cutting blades becuase that foam insulation inside gets messy fast and dulls teeth. I found that cutting the lid off first makes it way lighter, then you can slice the main body into three or four manageable chunks. If you've had the refrigerant professionally drained, most scrap yards will take the compressor and the metal panels as scrap metal for a few bucks. The rest of the insulated cabinet pieces can usually just go in your rental dumpster since the hazardous stuff is gone. It's a grueling afternoon of work, but breaking it down is the only way it’s coming up those narrow basement stairs.

I had to do this with an old Kenmore 25 cubic foot monster that the previous owners left behind in my 1920s bungalow. The basement stairs are only 28 inches wide, and that unit was easily 32 inches deep. I followed your advice and had a guy from the local repair shop suck the Freon out for fifty bucks before I even touched my reciprocating saw.
You weren't kidding about the mess. That yellow foam insulation gets everywhere and sticks to everythign like static cling once it's shredded. I used a Diablo Steel Demon blade which cut through the outer metal shell like butter, but I had to keep a shop vac nozzle right next to the cut line to keep the dust from coating the entire laundry room.
Taking the lid off first helped with the weight, but I actualy found it easier to cut the bottom out around the compressor assembly last. That motor unit is the heaviest part by far. Once I had the main insulated box in three vertical slices, I coud carry the pieces up the stairs solo without banging up the drywall. It took me about four hours and three blades, but it's finally out of my life.

Quick question for the experts here though—since I'll have a truck coming in and out to haul the scrap metal, how much weight can a standard residential driveway handle before it starts to sink or crack? I'm terrified of ruining the pavement while I'm trying to be productive!
You're gonna want a massive tarp under that beast before you start hackin'. That foam gets ground into the floor and it's a total pain to get out of the concrete pores. Since you're worried about the driveway, tell the scrap guys to stay on the street. Most residential pads can't take a loaded-down junk truck without hobby-horsing or cracking at the edges. I just used a furniture dolly to wheel my pieces out to the curb. It's way easier on the stairs and the slab.
I did this last summer and the one thing I'll add: wear a decent N95 mask and goggles. That pulverized foam isn't just messy, it's a massive irritant for your throat when it's flying off the blade. I also found that a simple circular saw with a cheap masonry or metal blade actualy tracked straighter than my Sawzall for those long side cuts. It kicks up more dust, but it kept the pieces uniform so they stacked perfectly on my dolly. Just make sure you have a helper spotting you on those narrow stairs; even the 'light' pieces are awkward as hell to carry solo.
Quick update — putting a tarp down like someone suggested was a total lifesaver for the foam mess, so thanks for that. I'm still struggling with getting the heavy compressor up those narrow stairs on my own though. Does anyone have a trick for hauling that part up without a second person, or shoud I just try to break it down further?
