Finding scorched subflooring or melted laminate under your range is a massive wake-up call. It usally points to a few specific culprits that people overlook. If you see charring near the gas line or electrical cord, you need to shut off the gas supply immediately. You're looking at a serious fire hazard. Most of the time, this happens beacuse of a loose gas fitting creating a micro-leak that ignites, or a faulty heating element that's venting heat directly downward instead of circulating it trough the oven cavity. Check the bottom heat shield of the unit first. If that metal plate is warped or missing, your floor is taking the brunt of every roasting cycle. I had this exact scare with my 2012 GE Profile gas range last winter. I noticed the linoleum starting to bubble and turn a dark amber color right under the front left area. When I finally pulled the unit out, there was a black circle about four inches wide scorched right into the plywood subfloor. I initially thought it was a gas leak like you mentioned, but the soapy water test showed the fittings were tight. It turned out my bottom heat shield had actually rusted thru in one corner because of a liquid spill that went unnoticed years ago. Every time I used the self-clean cycle, it was basicly acting like a blowtorch on that specific spot on the floor. I ended up buying a replacement galvanized plate and some high-temp insulation batting to fix it myself. If you’re seeing this, definatly check the seal on the oven door too. If the gasket is shot at the bottom, that heat just rolls right out and down under the kickplate. It's a massive relief to catch it before things get worse.

Seen this on a few Samsung NX58H5600SS units lately. Everyone blames the floor, but usally, it's a warped burner tube or a misaligned orifice. If that tube isn't seated perfectly, you get an elongated flame pattern that licks the bottom of the oven floor pan. Over time, that thin sheet metal fatigues and starts radiating raw heat straight down to the subfloor. Also, check if your unit came with an optional heat-shield kit. Most installers toss those thinking it's just extra packing material. If you’re running a high-BTU range on vinyl or thin laminate, you absolutely need that extra barrier to keep the floor from charring.
Back in my day, we’d just throw a piece of cement board or a scrap of slate under the stove and call it a day. If you've got a newer unit and the floor is charring, check for mice. Those critters love that fiberglass batting. They'll chew a hole right thru the insulation to build a nest, and suddenly you’ve got a 'hot spot' with no protection between the burner and your linoleum. I’ve pulled out old Tappan ranges where the entire bottom layer of insulation was gone, replaced by acorns and mouse droppings. If the insulation is thin or missing in spots, it doesn’t matter how good your heat shield is.
