Tips for building a brick range alcove that nobody talks about

We just finished a project in Coral Gables where the owner wanted a massive brick alcove instead of a standard vent, and the logistics are way trickier than people realize. If you're going for that rustic look, you have to plan your clearances for the gas range early because masonry takes up way more real estate than a standard cabinet. I’ve seen people mess up the arch height and end up with a hood insert that sits way too low, wich is a fire hazard and just looks cramped. Make sure you're plumbing that pot filler before the bricklayers start thier work because drilling through finished masonry later is a mess you want to avoid. You also need to think about lighting inside that nook. Since the brick absorbs so much light compared to white cabinets, you really need high-output LEDs tucked up there so you can acutally see your pans. It’s a bold style that looks great against modern quartz, but you have to be precise with the measurements or the proportions will feel completley off.


I went thru this exact process with a reclaimed thin-brick veneer last year in my own kitchen. One thing I didn't anticipate was how much depth I needed for the liner. I went with a 42-inch Best insert inside a 54-inch wide alcove, and we had to pull the range out almost three inches from the wall just so the front burners were acutally under the suction area. If you don't account for that extra brick thickness behind the stove, you end up with steam rolling right up the front of the arch and staining the face of the masonry. You’re spot on about the lighting. I used a pair of 3000K LED strips tucked behind the lintel, but the red tones in the brick just seem to soak up the brightness. I ended up swapping them for high-output 4000K pucks to get a cleaner look on the stovetop. Also, tell whoever is doing this to seal that brick early. Cleaning grease splashes off porous masonry is a nightmare if you haven't applied a heavy-duty matte sealer before you start frying bacon on a 48-inch Wolf.

Don't forget about the noise factor. Those brick alcoves act like a giant megaphone. If you don't pick a remote blower, the sound's gonna bounce around and drive you nuts while you're cooking.

Also, make sure you've got an access panel. I've seen guys have to rip out masonry just to swap a bad capacitor on the motor 'cause they didn't leave a way to get into the housing from the side or top. It’s a total headache if you don't plan for the blower eventually crapping out.

One overlooked variable is the static pressure consequence of the ductwork geometry within such a rigid enclosure, particularly if you are utilizing a high-CFM insert that necessitates a dedicated make-up air system to avoid backdrafting other atmospheric appliances. I have observed several installations where the transition from the liner to the main stack was restricted by the masonry's internal dimensions, resulting in significant turbulence that effectively neutered the blower's advertised performance despite the external appearance of a high-end setup; ensure your HVAC contractor isn't just shoving a 10-inch round pipe into a space that pinches the airflow.
