I handled this exact repair on my double door about two years ago after getting a similarly ridiculous estimate. The parts cost me around $180 for the kit, and honestly, the hardest part is just the physical labor of getting the old hardware off. If you are comfortable with tools, you can definitely do this in a single afternoon. The tension is absolutely somethig to respect, but it isn't some mystical force that's going to explode if you follow the safety protocols. Use actual **winding rods** that fit your spring’s winding cone perfectly; don't try to use screwdrivers or rebar. The main thing is to always keep your body and face to the side of the winding path, never directly in front of the rods. If a rod slips, you want it to hit the air, not your jaw.
You will likely need to reset the limits on your opener. Even if you buy the exact same spring wire diameter and length, the new steel won't have the same fatigue as the old set. Once the door is balanced—meaning it stays put when you lift it halfway manually—the motor might find the previous stop points are slightly off. Most openers have a simple 'learn' button or adjustment screws on the side to recalibrate the travel.
Make sure you also check your cables while the tension is off. If there is any fraying at all, swap them out since they usally come in those $180 kits anyway.
