Small roller bearings, e.g. on drawer sliders

Surely they're linear bearings?

roller skates are certainly a common size of bearing.

Rather than decide what items to scavenge for bearings I think it'd be more fruitful to spend some time looking at eBay listings to determine which items *really* are in the UK and available for rapid delivery (the option of Argos collection, even if you don't use it, is good clue).

Do they have to be roller bearings, or are deep groove ball races ok?

What about the guide bearings which come with some router bits? Are they any good?

Or ask Geoff where he gets his bearings for refurbishing boiler fans.

What exactly is your problem?

What are you actually looking for? Something to canibalise for bearings? What do you want the bearings for? It will almost certainly be cheaper, not to mention easier, to buy bearings for your application, especially if you buy unbranded stuff from the far east.

My old ride-on mower deck contained about eight bearings in the belt system which are actually the same size as those used in most skateboards. IIRC a dozen were less than a pound each on eBay, and that was from a UK source with delivery in a couple of days. Branded ones are something like a fiver a time (minimum).

Do you *really* mean roller bearings, or would ball bearing assemblies do? Skates and shelf runners will use ball bearings.

Set of two drawer runners from Screwfix: £6.49. That would actually provide FOUR bearings! (I've used the Screwfix runners for making new drawers and they work a treat.) And I could pick up the runners either tomorrow or certainly by Tuesday.

No, ball bearings are fine. The ones in the drawer runners actually are ball bearings.

Which ones are you looking at, because all the ones I looked at have a delivery ETA of between 5 and 15 May, whereas Screwfix have those drawer runners I mentioned in stock today for £5.49 a pair (4 ball bearings in total).

Top loaded cheapo cd drives. Usually three on plastic springs per drive. Look in laptops or cheap top loading boom box things. Brian
