Well nothing like it round our way. Oop North. Cockneys I see. Nuff said.

COHSE is one of those unions that disappeared. Along with NUPE. Their membership crashed. Probably because of the above.

The thing about cars is that you need someone who is a car nut to be in charge who will build a car people want to buy.

Once you put a bean counter in charge, a car manufacturer is doomed.

Or worse still, a socialist politician ie, nationalised. The place just becomes a work place, the undeserving get jobs there, not the talented.

It wasn't "nothing" to do with the unions. Who would invest in a company with a strike record like that?

Of course, the management was appalling as well.

BMC/BL had lots. Issogonis would be the obvious one. Moulton (as a consultant) who died the other day. The likes of Spence King who designed the Range Rover. And many more.

The problem started long before the 'Red Robbos' of this world.

Quite. And appalling management tends to get the workforce they deserve. After all, their purpose is to lead and motivate them - not look for confrontation at every opportunity.

True. OTOH, the unions had been a problem for years. Thass why there were TV programs and films parodying the fact - The Rag Trade on the telly and that film with Peter Sellers as the union man, and even an episode of Sykes. They were funny for the same reason that Fawlty Towers was funny - we recognised the truth in the situations.

No one would laugh at the Rag Trade today, because no one would understand where the humour was supposed to be coming from.

If in the 50s/60s anyone had suggested maggie-style industrial relations laws, there'd have been a pursing of the lips, an intake of breath, and "You'll never get that through, Squire". Nothing could be done - until people got *really* *fed* *up*, put maggie in, and the rest was history.

Well where were you down in the boiler room?...

She was there and was obstructed along with Two of her colleagues and I have no reason at all to disbelieve her or them..

It might well have been a small event but it happened all the same. I don't know if it was an official action or some members who took the situation into their own hands as it were..

You don't say. just how can we forget those of us who were around at that time..

I'm not re writing anything just telling it as it was thanks!...

I could be forgiven the impression above that you were in Cambridge at the time?...

The value is in reaching a standard. The standard of a degree is (should be) high. If, at any time, 50% of school leavers are considered to be capable of reaching that standard, then the standard is too low. Evolution isn't that good or that fast.

Standards have consistently been lowered for all qualifications post 11 for quite a while now.

Nothing I posted even hinted at that. You seem to have quite an imagination...

because it's commonly used as a refernce point. I thinik it's easier to remmeber 100C, I bet most peole know the bioling po= int of water is 100C, I bet most don;t know that in F or K=20

So we have an interesting temperatures we have F CK now what do U want to = complete the word ;-) =20

Yes - ever since they first started. For those who think workers must be kept 'in their place'. Same as servants. Or women.

You seem to have omitted Reggie Perrin. And The Office. Wonder why? And of course Fawlty Towers was a prime example of a business struggling on with incompetent management.

Really? More likely most wouldn't find prats like Reg varley funny.

And then 'put her out' after things like the poll tax where the Tories showed their true colours.

I think that's true or maybe the 'standards' have shifted. I'm pretty sure when I was at school universites were to teach the top 2% of the population rahter than the middle 50%, or thos ethat couldn't get jobs.

A polite way of saying hallucinating ?.

So you'd restrict all types of education to only those who can definitely pass the final exams?

Reply to
Dave Plowman (News)

Since when has all types of education been the same as Degree 'standard' ?

I was in charge of all maintenance. But I could run the steam boilers if it became necessary. And did on a couple of occasions.

Only true at STP. (Not STD)

Yes. The others should take vocational qualifications. They are just as important.
