Why is it pointless?
The bit they didn't show was where he used a giant outdoor lathe to cut away the rest of the tree to make the short cylinder.

Good woodturning skills ... but not very good design ... drying out plus heat of lamp will cause that to distort badly.
Think the video was just to show his skills.
