Although it turns out to not be that clear an advantage even there. Very dim white light is easier to see by even for astronomers - red light is harder for the eye to focus well.

I think there might be an element of truth in it.

because it's the least offensive colour and is more relaxing on the eyes and humans tend to have a larger scale for shades of green I guess due to where it is in the spectrum. It could also be because red is percieved as hot or warning or no go and blue is cold or watery. Could have been because it was cheaper to make too first.

It's unfortunate that I can't remember exactly what the primaries were on t he sets I'm talking about. I vaguely remember the green being a yellow-gree n. The end result was a much warmer toned picture that surprisingly looked ok on most scenes, but now & then looked quite off. Sat next to the usual R GB displaying a test card showed how off they were - some of the card colou rs just weren't the right colour at all.

Amber was common for monochrome word processor screens.

Cathode rays, if close enough, lit up the glass which was green for English lime glass and blue for the lead glass of the Germans.

A friend of mine at school got hold of a 5FP7 - radar tube with (I think) green trace and long persistence yellow.

He built a TV with it. It was weird to watch.

Getting pure colour bright phosphors was never easy. Think CRT colour TV sets. Those with the brightest picture has rather orange reds. Leading to poor flesh tones.

I'd guess in the early days of CRTs, green was the easy one to get bright enough.

With mono TVs, few were actually true B&W. More usually a shade of blue and white. Same problem as LEDs.

I don;t think this is the same problem as LEDs as blue LEDS were the hardes t to make Red being the first and easyest, and of course that the human eye is most reposnve to green yellow at about 550nm wavelenght could also have something to do with it.
