True and giffgaff have hiked up their rates so much that the six monthly text is now usually the most I do on my phone. With the odd exception any mobile calls are from my other SIM, currently 3p/min but WhatsApp gets as much as I can as I have some free (as in doesn't cost me anything, not an add on) data per month.

I have just signed for unlimited, unlimited and 5Gb for £6 with Plusnet. That was as offered to me, but I could probably have got it for less, by negotiating with them.

I was with PN mobile for a while, but was somewhat embarrassed when the last part of a transaction demanded a response to an SMS short code number, which PN don’t do.

Seems like a good reason not to deal with that supplier again, since they ask customers to do things that some have never even heard of, let alone have the ability to perform.

And I rubbed your nose in the fact that they aren't anything like as useful as a mobile for incoming voice calls and texts.

You personally may not care if no one ever calls you and you may never get texts that matter, but thats irrelevant to what makes sense for most people.

And have to wear the fact that that is nowhere near as convenient when you have to be careful about how long you talk for and how inconvenient it is to call operations which keep you on hold for long times.

Are you really so poor that you need to save £3 per month and have to put up with inconvenience with outgoing voice calls to save that little ?

You get that with £5 per month mobile plans.

There are f*ck all ADSL/VDSL/FTTC/FTTP services for £5 per month and those don't have the convenience of being able to use them almost anywhere with unlimited voice calls and texts.

I looked seriously at the 3 mobile broadband package, but I was put off by some pretty dire reviews.
