Burglar Alarms - DIY

Can anyone recommend a burglar alarm suitable for DIY installation and possibly to replace an existing system.

Ideally I would like something suitable for remote monitoring with an alarm notification by email and text message.

I've just replaced my self installed (wired, not wireless) broken Omnicron, which came from TLC, with an Optima, also from TLC. Not exactly a 'pin for pin' replacement, but not that tricky. Just remember to label each cable etc as you remove it from the old one. Luckily I'd already made a comprehensive wiring diagram on the computer. One slightly annoying thing was the old had individual connections for each 24 hour circuit. The new, only one, so had to link them with connector strip. But plenty room for it.

Other plus point was the recently replaced battery on the old fitted the new.

Minus point is the remote panel which I have sited by the front door isn't as good looking as the Omnicron one (the bit which had failed) The old was flush mounting with a brass surround - the new just a surface mounted plastic box. But at least I managed to use the same wiring between them.

I already had an SDI unit, so haven't updated anything there.

Thank you for the only response. Not a very popular subject1

I have found A Texecom Premier Elite which I can connect to the Internet for remote monitoring.

Most would go for wireless these days. Which simplifies the installation greatly. Provided you don't mind even more batteries to go flat. Mine pre-dates that technology.

Looks to be pretty pricey. ;-)

It is the only product that I have found that will allow remote access via the Internet, which I consider very important for the application I have in mind.

If you want to read the installation manual before buying it then email me.

Yes - it's what killed my Omnicron.

Even more annoying than the cost of replacing the entire thing was the Omnicron remote panel was flush fit and with a brass surround, so looked quite good - it's the first thing you see at the front door.

The replacement is just a pretty cheap looking surface mount plastic box. I did Google for something better - but they all seem similar these days.

Thank you for your offer. Fortunately Texecom were kind enough to email me a copy. I was not to sure what response I would get when I asked them.

My knowledge about burglar alarms has been limited to knowing what to do if entering a neighbours house to feed their cat.

You might have fun fitting the new one if re-using existing sensors and so on. Different makers seem to call things by different names, and don't give a decent circuit diagram so you can work it out from first principles.

I have reently fitted an Elite. It took some programming up - well the keyfobs did.
