Apple ipads (again)

This fool is totally witless. He needs a good beating for his own good.

You seem to have a problem with your computer - it keeps on repeating stuff. Perhaps you need someone up to assessing computer systems?

Indeed, cheapskating on Android tablets is not recommended, why waste =A3=

on a supermarket tablet from a unknown Chinese manufacturer, that's =

clearly "only" Android, but not a Google approved device, when a cutting= =

running the latest Jellybean Android, and guaranteed to be updated to th= e =

latest Android as soon as it's announced (this is WHY a Nexus device is = =

the device to have).

Android 4.2 is due to be announced next week, and bringing with it =

multi-user support and parential controls. No more wasting money on =

separate tablets for other members of the family, just because the compa= ny =

Yet another feature Apple will be bringing to ioS9 in 2016

Thank you. I'm afraid the family would be horrified not to receive a

3rd generation model :-(

A subject very close to my heart at present.

Indeed :-)

However, it has been a fascinating discussion, and has prompted me to read about the Nexus 7, both reviews of it and the ipad, and whilst I can see that the Nexus looks like a bargain, price wise, 'the family' seem to have decided that a 3rd generation ipad is what is needed. They both use iphones, with which they're delighted, so I suppose it makes sense. I'm not entirely sure what the ipad does that the iphone doesn't, but who am I to question their wisdom?

Sounds like the Apple Lock-In claims another victim. Of course once you get the iPad, you will then be further locked in, and unlike Android, you have to buy all your apps again in iPad versions...

Enjoy.... Peer pressure has won over common-sense yet again.

Says who? Some bloke down the pub, or Steve Jobs?

Buy them the iPad. Spend a similar amount on the most stoonkingly amazing Android tablet you have..and use it near them.

Not entirely true - if you are happy with the iphone version, it'll work fine.

So the more sensible option would be to move to android - where they would have to buy *all* of their apps again?

If you live in an apple world (ie, content from itunes) then the ipad makes a lot of sense (well, in as much as any tablet makes sense).

Yes, it's lock in (of a sort). Convenient though.

Abandoned by the manufacturer I meant, not the user. The user just gets annoyed that they can't upgrade (officially).

example - got a 2011 Xperia phone? No jelly bean for you.

Sony aren't unusual in this - just the first one to hand

We have loads of users who have a android phone on contract that can't be updated to the latest Android (without unofficial updates that is).

iOS devices tend to be longer supported (at least 3 years). Part of that is a side effect of Apple continuing to flog the old models as "entry level" but to the end user, they see a longer "support" life.

So? It worked the day you bought it, it works today, why does it need updating? It's a 'phone FFS.

But that's just where you're wrong you see. As explained in the article, with Jellybean 4.1 and Google Voice actions, for example you can ask the phone "How tall is Scarlett Johansson," in natural language. The system will then show a picture of the actress's face, and give her height; it also speaks aloud and tells you the information. And all within less than a second.*

This is the sort of performance the likes of Charles Babbage, John Van Neumann, Alan Turing, Mauchley and Ekert, and Maurice Wilkes could only ever dream of. Just imagine how long it would have taken Collossus, ENIAC or EDSAC to tell you just how tall Scarlett Johahnson was. Days ? Weeks ? Months ?

Given the number of celebrities there must be in the world, it does make you wonder how anyone ever survived without being able to find out how tall they were and seeing their picture within less than a second.

You can see why people are simply falling over themselves to get hold of this stuff, now can't you.

Same as SatNav. How did anyone ever get any further than the end of the street without it ?
