OT: You are what you drive

Strategic Vision has the result of a survey in which they ranked new car purchases by the political affiliation of the buyers.

Democrats

  1. Honda Civic
  2. Volvo C30
  3. Nissan Leaf
  4. Acura TSX Wagon
  5. Ford Fiesta Sedan

Republicans

  1. Ford Mustang convertible
  2. Audi A8
  3. Mercedes GL
  4. Ford Expedition
  5. Ford F-150

The group is soliciting anecdotal evidence on why there is such a wide difference in selections.

You can stop right there. Nissan sold 579 Leafs last month. Not enough to get into any legitimate car survey. So I deem this post bogus and troll bait. Just responded to brag about my car knowledge.

Agree, but there wouldn't be a lot to fill pages if not for fluff pieces. And then where would fluffy folks like heybub get their links for endless goofy off topic posts?

I think it is a crock too. Toyota Prius should be at top of Dem's list. Fairly cheap and they suck up big tax rebate.

Hey, at least it's about cars, which most of us have. He could have posted about "Best Libertarian Baby Back BBQ sauce." That would stump more people, and be even more OT.

I drive a 1995 Chevrolet 3/4 ton work van. Full of tools, and two ladders on top. I guess that makes me an over taxed Republican, living in a Democrat state.

Seems unlikely. You're here 18 hours a day, every day.

Fer what...?!

Well, I'll always think of you as a top-posting moron, first.

Didn't know that. But 579 is _way_ more than Chevy Volts. Heck, General Motors didn't even MAKE any Volts last month.

I read the whole report; the general overview shows that larger vehicles are more likely to be purchased by Republicans, smaller vehicles by Democrats. There's some overlap in the medium-size category. Those preferences can probably be mostly attributed to age, income, location and employment. Large SUVs and pickups are predominantly purchased by Republicans. Republicans trend older, and older people tend to prefer larger vehicles. Republicans average higher incomes, so they can afford to spend more on larger (more expensive) vehicles. People living in rural areas trend Republican, and will usually need pickups or large SUVs from a practical standpoint (roads, line of work). Democrats tend to live in cities where a smaller, more nimble car is better for parking. A multifunction vehicle is a practical alternative to owning both a truck and a small car, so they buy the multifunction vehicle instead. Democrats trend younger, and younger people set trends, hence the current popularity with them for 'green' vehicles.

I noticed the Republicans overwhelmingly favor the cheap convertibles. My sister was telling me about this awhile go, saying that market (Mercedes in particular) was specifically targeting the "aspirationals" - young people entering the workforce who have good income, no kids yet, few expenses, and want to reward themselves with something fun, especially something that looks luxurious, but isn't too expensive.

Uh, no. March Volts sales were +2289, by far their biggest month yet.

Maybe GHW Bush buying one for son Neil spurred sales.

Wow! I haven't been keeping up! Thanks for the update; last I heard was that General Motors was selling less than 300/month.

Of course Ford F-series, for comparison, sold 58,061 units in March.

Could be. We'll never know.

Let me kill this thread early by being the 1st to point out that all the Republican's choices of manufacturer did business with the Nazi's during World War II. Then again, so did 80% of the Democrat's choices, though in a more convoluted manner.

May have something to do with the fact that Democrats think emotionally and Republicans think rationally. Different mindsets. ^_^

Probably has more to do with the fact that most Republicans have jobs and can afford the more expensive vehicles. Most democrats are on welfare and can only afford the cheap ones.
